Luggage Costs

TearAway

Guest
I'm looking at a few 06/07 1200GSAs at the moment - most have no luggage.

So... which luggage is better - the gs or the gsa. The GSA looks very large for traffic work. And what kind of cost am I looking at for either and for a top box. :nenau

I like the idea of a top box but they are notorious for causing weave at speed - any one experience this on the GSA

I'm assuming they are interchangable betweent he two models

Any info would be great :thumb

Maybe that was 30yrs ago? :nenau

Can't advise you on the BM stuff as I use the superior Metal Mules ;)

I've had both. The plastic ones look nice, are great if you want to carry minimal luggage and don't mind it falling out when you open the lids :blast The BM inners, IMVHO, are an expensive waste of space.

The metal ones are marginally wider, but if that's a worry then the mirrors / cylinder heads might also get smacked  They don't allow the luggage to be dumped on the floor, but make sure they're closed otherwise water might get in.

I've had no problems with weaving with either set at "autobahn" speeds, one and two up.

You can fit either plastic or meatl to either with the correct mounts, and to me it looks like the mounts will easily swap over.

In short if you only ride in traffic jams and don't need much space and they're very cheap, get the plastic ones. Otherwise get the metal ones :thumb2

I have a nearly new 1200GSA with standard 1200 Vario panniers.
Firstly I don't even notice when I've got the topbox on. Secondly I didn't see the need for the standard GSA luggage as I don't plan on trying to ride it over mountains. You will get all kinds of conflicting advice on luggage here from people who use them for all kinds of purposes. I plan to do some european travelling with SWIMBO and the Vario luggage is perfect for me

Ive got a GSA with the GSA Alu side panniers.

Ive just orderd a big Givi topbox thru eblag, about 100 quid all in.

Whereas the Alu GSA top box would have been cost of topbox, lock kit, back rest etc, came to more than double the price of the givi and i couldnt get 2 helmets in it like i can with the Givi.

I isnt going to look as good as the Bwm ally box, but fuction over form is needed for me, take your choice, pay yer price!

I agree with Matt regarding function over form. I have GIVI three box set up on my GS, I found the Vario panniers great for a weekend away, but for two weeks in Europe they would have been useless. The BMW liners again look wonderful but are an expensive option IMHO.

Yea starting to think the Vario or the Givi are the way to go. The GSA Stardards look huge.

Had a look at some Givi units online - looks like there are a pile of different mounting brackets to put on... Flatpack nightmare :tears

I wouldn't discount the GSA luggage. Have a look at the stuff mounted on the bike and make your own mind up - it certainly looks and feels the business. I've ridden with vario and GSA luggage and when filtering I'm cautious with either attached.

The GSA luggage also has the benefit of extra fixing points for additional items.

why spend a fortune on a bike and then scrimp on accessories? :nenau

The resale value of BMW accessories is generally v.good. I always consider the true cost to be some 20-30% of what I pay - I get the rest back when I sell the bike.

Just have a look at this forum, as soon as somebody puts up vario/GSA panniers they're gone within the day.

I sold my 3xvario boxes in about 1hr and got 75% of my price back after 2yrs :thumb

I ordered the GSA panniers with mine, yes they are expensive and I probably shouldn't have bought the liners with them, but imho the other options just don't work so well with the look of the bike. Appearance alone, has to be the real thing.

By the way, my bike is being delivered tomorrow...woohooo!!

the inners are great :)

the inners are great :)

Am sure they are fab but if I wasn't going crazy with the new bike I probably wouldn't have bought them - £63 each isn't great value

On the positive side I have to agree with GSMonkey, the BMW luggage does retain value very well. I saw a pair of the inners on Ebay this week, they were over £120 with an hour to go!!!

there are after market inners on eblag, look much nicer than the Bwm ones and they have a lifetime guarentee.

Cheaper as well :augie

Now... I have options..

I was happier when I didn't know.. because I thought once I knew... I'd be happy..

But now that I know.. It's become clear that I'm not sure...

And damb it.. I'm still not happy :blast

And your dilema's have just begin, you'll probably be wanting to do something with the seat after 1000 miles. Hmmm, my head still gets alittle buffeting, what about a screen extender. Need gps as well, now im travelling around more, it'd be nice to be talking to the wifey, need autocom, shit i wanna camp, everything needs to be microsized and quality. SHIT, i need new everything!!! :blast
