if i were you....i'd check the "show us yours"subforum and spend an evening browsing trough some beautiful pics from fellow-forummers.

make a cuppa, sit back and enjoy some pics...if you come across a nice pair of cases just send a friendly email to the user who puts the pics up.

99% chance you'll get a reply with all the answers to ur q's :thumb2

thats whats a forum is also about :rob

i forgot

on a 1200 juse TTcases...they looks the dogs:thumb

dont go for the big XL topbox though....looks like youre an oil-tanker-boat.

better use the smaller Hepco&becker, that makes a nice combination

i dont know whether the adv cases will fit a non-adv bike? they're nice too

Don't bother with a top box, just get a large Ortlieb bag.

Much easier to use, pack, carry in etc, and totally water and dust proof.

As for Panniers, read the FAQ :thumb2

I think what to buy depends on what you use the bike for. If you're going around the world or travelling for six months then panniers and a top box would be great. Three secure locking boxes and anything of low importance or cost can go into tank bag or roll bag. Shorter trips and you'd probably just manage with panniers, I did last year for three weeks in Scandinavia and took a roll bag for waterproofs, dirty washing and anything that wasn't particularly valuable( and the smell would deter any potential thieves). For ever day use I think top box is best especially in traffic as it doesn't widen the rear of the bike for filtering and manouvering. If you want panniers for every day use then look at something that fits snugly to the bike with exhaust cut outs like Verns or Caja Sachel.
When I chose my luggage I spent ages looking and in the end went for Metal Mule, one of the main points being its as easy to remove the luggage as open the panniers so therefore easy to change the set up depending on what you're doing.

Hi Pinto, I use BMW's own vario panniers, a Givi top box & a tail pack on the rear seat.

1. BMW Vario Panniers. These came with the bike so I'll stick with them. Great for resting your helmet on when you stop  but the 'outside' size doesn't match the 'inside' size due to the vario system that reduces the width of the panniers ( the mechanism is all concealed inside).
The left hand side is smaller in capacity than the right hand side due to the exhaust. I use my old Honda Pan European pannier bags & can fill them & fit them inside the panniers.

2. Givi top box. An old box I got with an old CB500 years ago. Bought a Givi rack to take this box. OK for touring but I take everything off for everyday looks.

3.Tail Pack. A cheap £15 item from HG but it stores my waterproofs, lock/chain & duty free.

Love to post a photo but the unique funding system here is preventing me. :augie

Here's a photo though..

The BuMW inner bags for theiir vario panniers are IMHO over engineeered. Very smart and fancy of course, but too bulky.

Beter by far (and much cheaper) are the inner bags from Mane Event. As luck would have it, I have some for sale. There you go, advice and a saving, all in one post.

PS The BuMW vario panniers are excellent. Mine never leaked. Just make sure the locating 'mushroom' pillar (onto which the boxes lock) is screwed in tight and lock nutted properly.

PPS As you have not signed up for subscription I don't think you can see the For Sale section. So, just for you, here's the advert:

FOR SALE: MANE EVENT INNER BAGS FOR 1200GS VARIO PANNIERS

Just like these: http://www.maneevent.org.uk/bmw.htm Scroll down to BMW 12.

Better IMHO than the BuMW bags as they are much less bulky, leaving more space for your shreddies and her smalls.

In perfect condition (as new) - £75 new.

For sale at a third off: £50 plus P&P

I see you are in Portugal, very nice. I am happy to trade in Euro.
