Hello every GSer

Just got back from my hols in Greece, 40 degrees in the shade most days and a dam sight hotter in the open. Shorts and T shirt with leather slip on shoes for riding in that kind of weather, never once considered the rain thing.

Arrived home to be greeted by next door neighbour, get this thing off my patio please! (On 2 Wheels Bike Lift)

True to their word, the carriers for M & P didn't phone to advise me of any delivery date or time, so my bike lift arrived in my absence.

I have to say that the pictures in M & P catalogue do not do the thing justice. It is much wider than the photo suggests (a good thing) and the overall construction is very good. I'm happy with the price (£299.99 + £25 delivery) and it is sturdy and confidence inspiring unlike some other offerings available.

Minimal assembly of the (very generous) front wheel clamp and stabilser feet was all that was required. I lubricated all the bearings (yes it has a bearing race enclosed inside the wheel clamp spindle) and pivot points and spanner checked all nuts and bolts, popped the Transalp on and with a paddock stand on the swinging arm tried out the lift; bloody excellent with two locking devices in case the hydraulics fail.

I recommend this lift if you are looking to buy one, check M & P web site www.MandP.com can't say much about the delivery though. If you buy one get some tie downs as well for added safety. Maximum weight for the lift to handle is 1000 lbs.

I have the small bike lift out of the two available from that site, which one is yours?

With some minor modifications it holds my 1100GS exceptionally well. When I'm finished I pull it apart and roll it under the bench. probably the best tool I've ever bought for working on the bike.

We have 40º + days here as well and I can tell you hot bitumen is just as bad as cold bitumen if one goes for a slide. If it's really stinking hot the go is light kit, or don't go out until it's cooler.

Hi Mick

My lift is the large one with width adjustable base feet at the front for increased stability.
I'm impressed that M & P supply Australia, are there not any similar companies in your part of the world?

As for the 'light' clothing we were just following what the locals do, the cops wear helmets and boots, but next to bugger all else apart from shirt and trousers. 3 up on scooters in town is not unusual (thats mum dad and the kid) grannies sit side saddle, so do some of the girls if their skirts too tight to ...er...spread their legs if you get what I mean.

I doubt that there is much control on pretty much anything to do with bikes and scooters, open pipes, race cans, slick tyres anything seems to go; I think that the cops just accept that its the only form of transport for their fellow Greeks and adopt a kind of live and let live attitude. Bliss eh!

By the way this is for Rhodes, on mainland Greece I suspect things may be a little more contolled.

Regards Tony

Tony, no M & P didn't supply my hoist but the two that they do stock are identical to what I have or could have purchased.

I assume that the market of these items is rather restricted and the same manufacturer could/does supply to mostly a world wide market.

Yeah I take your point on the local scene. This Christmas we are going to Germany (Wife is German) and on the way home we are going to Vietnam for a week. We will hire a bike for at least one day trip and I suspect that the riding gear will be rather down market to the norm I use here.

Mick.
