I took my sons MacBook for a minor repair and they loaded El Capitan, wiping out masses of music files which I didn't know he had already lost the back up too.

Having googled recovery software there are lots of "free" programmes available, most of which I'm sure I shouldn't touch with a barge pole.

Can anyone recommend me a programme that is safe and easy to use please:aidan

Loading a new IOS should not wipe out any files ! unless of course he took it back to factory in which case they are probably gone for good as the HD will have been re formatted

I know this is a smug hindsight type of comment but whilst mac books are bloody brilliant they do need to be backed up regularly.

Just because a HDD has been formatted it does not mean you can not recover files from it, there are various tools (software) that can be used to recover data from a formatted HDD, it would depend on how badly you require the data and if its worth your while and cost to do it or to get it done. EaseUS software to name one would do this there are many more.
As i have said it will depend on how badly you want the data back and if you consider yourself competent enough to do it.

I am fairly au fait with computers, having built and upgraded domestic Windows machines a good few times over the years. I would like to recover as much of his music as possible. I feel a little guilty as I thought I was doing him a favour and didn't realise he had lost his back up drive.
I am prepared to have a go but given the wealth of knowledge and experience on here, I am hoping someone will pop up and say something like "I used xxxx and it worked ok and there were no hidden pitfalls/charges or advice to that effect. Professional recovery could run into hundreds apparently and he must be able to reload the music he's paid for....so it ain't going to be that important!

If he's paid for the music from iTunes or Amazon he can just download it again.

I realise that mr cookie but he apparently had a lot of stuff from elsewhere and some he had created himself.

Mind you I've just thought, given his taste in music it may be just as well if it is lost forever!:barf:rob
