ive got a may 2012 15 inch one that the screen went black on. being not very good with these things ive today taken it down tosee my genius at my localish store in cambridge. the out come is a fooked graphics card, which is appently attached to something else which also needs to be replaced, logicboard or something?
upside is im a bit pissed of that it now needs 425 spending to get fixed. pretty crap when they cost 1700 new. is this a common fault anyone know i thought it was going to last forever, my old white plastic book lasted longer  and better to touch.

anyone know a way round to fix it cheaper ?:beerjug:

ive found a guy on ebay who does a leaded rebaling chip repair , he has excellent feedback and costs only 70 sqid . sound like a goood solution thank god:green gri

Hope it works out- keep us posted on progress. I have used a Stockport company- Notebook Repair- they do all the Apple stuff for Ireland. Nice guys and good prices.
I've been a Macbook user since forever and wouldn't use anything else- they are normally ultra reliable.

Did you take it to a proper Apple Store or an independent? The reason I ask is that there was a free replacement of faulty graphics boards from Apple a few years ago. They didn't mention it unless you asked them. Do a Google search on graphic board replacement under warranty, or similar, or go on the Apple support website and have a search.

Sorry I can't be more definite but I was only told my my Mac engineer and am not sure what years it covers.

Good luck

That was certainly the case with some pre unibody MacBooks. That would make it about 2008/9 I think.
Might well have been similar issues since. Apple do seem to have as much trouble with graphics cards as BMW do with final drives. See also iMacs.

well thanks for all the replies, the good news is its all done (so im told, its in the post ) and was a straight forward job .

yes it was a proper apple store and it was quite frightning the amount of wonderfull 27 " imacs , notebooks etc being looked at. and over hearing the cost of repair:rolleyes:

when i was there i also thought of the similarity of apple and bmw (bikes), in that there regaurded by themselves at least as being the the very best and charge us accordingly . but letting themselves down by poor build quality then over charging for repairs to something that should not need fixing.

lucky for us guys like steptoe and http://www.vaiorefurbs.co.uk/ exist to help us out when it goes tits up. i best wait till i get it back before i give him the thumbs up.

as to applecare im not sure id bother now i did look at getting a new air and the 3 year care was £200 on a £1000 machine. if you buy from john lewis you get 2 year warranty so it £200 for 1 year in reality . id rather live dangerously and keep the money ta.

ill clock back in monday when it should be here. im currently borrowing a pc laptop and what a horrid thing it is, i know why i like apples and bms arent bad either especially the 2v ones :D

I have a 13" Macbook Pro which I have had for 4 years and use heavily on a daily basis.....never had a single problem with it.

I have a 27" IMac of a similar age which receives fairly heavy use, particularly for photo editing...never had a single problem with it.

I have an IPad.............and guess what?............yep, never had a single problem with it............and my IPhone spookily enough always seems to do what it is required of it when it is required.

I guess you and those other owners were just unlucky!

Apple will apparently acknowledge a two year warranty on their products if pressed, having failed to get out of it in arguments with the EU.

I know of a few folk who have rejected their machines and apple have replaced them

And what use is all that shite to a guy who had a problem you smug arsehole?

This may be useful for some that fancy attempting a repair themselves

https://www.ifixit.com/

I've used it several times for repairing broken iPad / iPhone / iPod screens for family members.

@ the Fanboy, I had a 27" iMac, replaced twice under warranty (inside a year) and Apple care is a racket which they are able to run by operating their walled garden policy. Modern Mac's are only Intel Hardware at the end of the day, and not difficult to repair. Parts can be ordered from Ebay, someone will cry chinese knock off, but where are the originals actually made :)

Yes it was. The last non unibody models.
It was a defective video card. On laptops and iMacs/Mac Minis it's all on one board, hence they'll have to replace it all.

It happened to me on my older 2008 17" MacBook Pro.
Went dark at Christmas two years ago. Came back to London and had it fixed by Apple. For free because it was a known defect of that series.
I've been lucky because they stopped fixing them for free a few months after that. It was pretty old anyway...

If you can't work out the point of my comment addressing the highlighted part of the OP's than there is no hope for you, you ignorant f**k!

well he has fixed it and comes with a 3 month warranty . very pleased its only cost me around £90 including postage there and back. better than £420 ish. still think it shouldn't break after 26 months use but hey ho theres still nothing better than a mac.
like the look of the ifixit site :beer jug:

:thumb2

26 months is not much less than I ever got from Windows PCs before something serious began to fail. The one bought in 2007 had its motherboard fail by 2010 its replacement lasted 2 years and again it was motherboard. Neither were cheap crap. That's when I went to Apple. So far so good but Im still under 26 months.
