Three people have been bitten during the same 24 hour period close by this road.
Just thought it worth posting incase any of you intrepid travellers are heading that way.

BTW, I'm not sure it's a 'mad bear' or they've all started taking chunks out of people. Something to consider if venturing into the woods for a natural break.

Spanish tourist’s bear photo in Romania turns bloody

A 74-year-old Spanish tourist had a horror holiday in Romania. The woman was bitten by a bear on Wednesday afternoon near the entrance to the famous Transfăgărășan mountain road in Romania.

Talking to my cousin about this, she was lucky. He had 2 encounters just outside the village near Miercurea Ciuc. Stopped for a piss and as he looked up a fucking bear was watching him. Pissed his pants as he jumped back in the car. Second one was when he was driving the tractor one just jumped across the road in front of him. They have one bear visiting the outskirt of the village, can't shoot them unless they have "Drawn blood". Lately he said they seen bears with 2 cubs which is unusual.
They can be big, as tall as 7 feet and up to 400 kg and can be as fast as an average horse. The claws can be up to 4'' long.
Personally I would exit pronto, fuck taking pictures from few meters.
 
Surely shooting one after it has drawn blood is leaving things a bit late? Is bear spray freely available there like it is in the USA?

Wolf and bear are protected now, you can't shoot wolf even if attacks livestock and there is no compensation. During communism foreign hunters were permitted to hunt in Romania and there was proper game management. I never ever seen a bear anywhere near habitated areas or roads like you see now. Only thing my grandfather used to advice us is to avoid wild berries areas in some parts of the forest.

On the Transfargarasan highway You get a warning on your phone if you go in an area bears have been seen.
This is no good if your on a bike of course.

No doubt it'll be moronic fucking humans chucking food to them..the bears then suss out quickly that its easier than nibbling berries....ooh a human = food....Twix advert come to life

 
We were there last year and saw about ten bears at various points along Transfargarasan....the problem here is not the bears, its the morons trying to feed them through the windows of their cars. Biggest idiot we saw though was a German biker, who seeing a bear in a layby - parked his bike about 20Ft away and gets off the bike and walks towards the bear taking photos!
