A few weeks ago I got a Meridian Colo(u)r. It is ace. I beleive the main difference between the two receivers is that the Meridian can use SD cards for maps and route/waypoint storage, but the Sportrack cannot and is limited to its inbuilt memory.

I bought it in the States, the cost on my Credit Card was £166 including a fag lighter lead!

The best thing about the Meridian (and maybe the Sportrack, they're very similar) is that you can very easily upload new basemaps, so within a couple of hours my US basemap GPS had a European one. It was a peice of cake.

Magellan also have Directroute software in the US, which gives the GPS the ability to autoroute. They say a European version should be out in the Spring, but isn't that now?

I'm very pleased with the Meridian, and think the extra cost to use SD cards is worth it.

Could you explain me how the process to upload a EU basemap works . I was planning on bringing one back from the Us as well

Thanks

The easiest way is to load the basemap onto an SD card, then using a key combination you access a "secret menu" (woooo). Dial in the numbers 86 and enter and the new basemap will be loaded onto the GPS.
If you join the Yahoo Group Meridian_Europe you can download the EU basemap, from the "files" page (it's in two parts, don't worry WINRAR will reassemble it) and save it to your PC.
Once saved you can either copy it to an SD card via a card reader and use the method I've mentioned, or as a serial download using the lead that comes with the GPS. Be warned the serial method takes ages and can be a bit flakey.
On the same groups files page is the Meridian FAQ, a fantastic resource, way better than the manual and it outlines all the ways to change your basemap.
I had a problem renaming the map and was advised to use the DOS command "REN blah blah" which did the trick, Windows seems to give the file two .img extensions.
Check out the FAQ, it's well worth a read.
