Bought a Zumo 500 off ebay last week, registered it and it offered upgraded maps but only at a cost.. how can I check if the versions I have are the latest or older?

This would seem to say it all:

If they were up to date, why would it offer an update

You could register (for free) the device with My Garmin. It will then check that your mapping is up to date for you.

Failing that, take a note of the map number. Then call Garmin and ask them.

You might as well see if the software on the device is up to date, too. Again, you can download a check (free) from the Garmin site.

1.Since I have only just registered and bought the item one would assume that if the maps were up to date they would offer free ones for the first update.. hence why I asked.
2.Plus one of the offers was the Maps for life upgrade thing so not clear to me if Garmin always offer that anyhow.
3.I'm not sure how well the registration went,it seemed to complete ok but had a few issues along the way.

I did try to register but not convinced it went completely ok, so was hoping that perhaps there was serial numbers I coulod check, or look somewhere on the mapsource disk to see what version I have.

do what jaws said an tell us your results

Using Jaw's good advice, do as Dragonrider suggests.

I am running what was until a few days ago the latest maps for a Zumo 550. The number is NT 2009.11 but a new mapset has just been released. I do not have the number as I haven't downloaded them yet.

Failing that, contact Garmin. They will do your registration for you and advise you if your map set is not up to date.

You can also check that your software version is up to date on your GPS device. Go to: SYSTEM ----> ABOUT

The up-to-date version is:

Version 4.70

Audio version 1.50

GPS SW version 3.00

Again, you can check and update the device's software by downloading Web Updater from the Garmin site.

The latest mapset, at least for the Zumo 550, is NT 2010. It's available for download now from the Garmin site.

I noticed the 2 options, £59.99 for latest update, of (think price is correct) £99.99 for life time updates, any one gone for the life time option? Regards Dus :thumb2

I have subscribed to the Numaps for life. It works well.

Two comments though:

(1) When I go to My Garmin (on the Garmin website) and check whether updates are available it says, "Your maps are up to date, no updates are available". But, if I then click on the 'Details' hotlink it tells me that a new mapset is available. Which indeed it is.

I have pointed this glitch out to Garmin.

(2) You can download the maps (and upadtes) to as many PC's as you like. BUT you can only link the maps and upadtes to ONE GPS device. So, if you change your GPS device - for instance going from a 550 to 660 - or you have two devices (husband and wife's perhaps) you will need to subscribe again.

I raised this with Garmin, too. Their honest reply was that it is a requirment of the copyright holders of the maps (Mapsource) not Garmin. There is no discount, nor alternative. The bod I spoke to had the same problem, with no discount for employees and / or for 'existing subscribers'.

I pointed out to Garmin that this might put some people off, either the subscription (though you would still need to buy un-lock codes even if you do not subscribe) or - more importantly for Garmin - if punters delayed changing their devices quite so often. Though, given the excitement over the 660's arrival this, I admit, seems unlikely.

You used to be able to get a 2nd unlock code (for a second Garmin GPS) free of charge, unfortunately this was withdrawn by Garmin (at Navteq's bidding) a couple of years ago. It was for exactly the purpose of a user, or household, with 2 sat navs.

Indeed you could.

Now it's cheaper updates but more of them nad / or pay for a second or subsequent device.

It's OK if you have just one device or don't swap too often, of course.

Still very much cheaper than loads and loads of very detailed maps, which ever way one chops it.

:hijacked Well not really :augie

Does that Garmin for life update, also update mapsource or just the unit? Wifey may buy me it for me birthday, and I keep forgetting(read-can't be bothered) to phone up too ask :thumb2

It updates all the maps / background info on your PC (or PC's if you have Mapsource installed on more than one) and on the single associated GPS device.

It takes between one and two hours to download the maps onto a PC via a half decent broadband connection. It then takes another say two hours for the PC to send the data to the GPS device.

If you have Mapsource installed on more than one PC, you have to repeat the whole process (pc and GPS device) each time.

In short, it works. It takes a while, so get on with something else while it's doing its stuff.

Thanks for the

Thanks for the advice, fink I'll be a life timer, more expense, 550 has proved a great device, couldn't do current job with out it ether, does any one know if some one does a clear stick on protection for the screen, as i use it so much now, managed to put a scratch on the unprotected screen surface, Bugger n Doh :blast Cheers to all, especially those who know black is the fastest GS colour! :hide :D

Ok,

It seems my version of the mapping is out of date:

City Navigator Europe NT Deluxe Unlock 2008
Region: City Navigator Europe NT Regions
Code: UCE38C2
Unlock Code: 8CMU6AH8FXFAHQSXWTXVHXUW3
Date Unlocked: March 3, 2009

The Garmin site offers me the 2010 version but only at cost, cosidering I have only just bought and registered the unit that seems wrong? I'll call them Monday and see what they have to say but hoping I have not missed something.. could it be that by buying on eBay I am now stuffed witht he old version, even though the item was brand new and the seller claims to be an official Garmin dealer?
