Righty GPS thicky here.

When I make a route on my laptop from A to B it ends up as lots of small routes between the points I mark along the way (does that make sense) so when it is complete and I look at it in the left hand secion it maybe made up of 10 or more small routes. How do I get that to save as just one complete route with one total mileage and time that I can transfer to the unit rather than lots of route sections?

Without mapsource in front of me and there's probably a stich routes together option, like the tracks this is one way of doing it.

Use the "route selection" tool and start at the start  and then go to the last point. This'll create a route with the same start and finish points. Then use the "arrow" tool (can't remmber its proper name :o) and drag the long route to the points that you'd already selected. Do this as often as is needed for the long route to cover the bits of route, IYSWIM?

That doesn't make sense to me.... I think you are doing it differently than I do...

All my routes are one long route, with via points in the middle if I so choose to direct the route along a certain path..

Try this:

type ctrl r

enter start point and end point and click on the directions tab to let the route draw between your two points.

Then use the selection tool on the map page and click on your route line... it will change color and start to drag with the pointer.. click it down on your intended road... repeat till satisfied..

Or if you want to make a route that passes a bunch of waypoints:

type ctrl r

enter your route points in order from start to finish as you intend to visit them...

hit the directions tab to get it to draw...

Hope this helps... I don't know what you are doing to make a bunch of short routes, but it never happens to me.
