What is the theretical maximum you can draw from a R1150GS Adv without blowing things up?

Im using a extension lead into a Baglux tank bag with all my bits and bobs rammed in there to charge things up on my 4 week trip around Europe. Im gonna have a battery charger, camcorder charger x2, camera charger, lamp charger, phone charger, and possibly more.

Its not all gonna be charged simulantiosly however I wanna know im not gonna pop my GS if I use a splitter!!! :nenau

Incidentally most of this will be ran through a 70 watt power inverter giving me a 240v power point in the tank bag.

TIA!!!

Why do you require an inverter, these are not efficiant and will take power for nothing. The output is possibly 15amps which is what the fuse is rated at
I think if you take this kind of load for a while you will have battery problems.

Where possible im going to use a 12 volt adaptor for the device im using. For example, my iPod and phone I have adaptors for but my laptop, camcorders and battery charger I have no adaptor for.

What sort of time do you think I can run my devices for safely without drawing too much from my battery.

I will only be charging stuff whilst running the engine and riding.

Could anybody confirm how much a GS's alternator is able to kick out spare after runing the engine and keeping the battery topped up?

The maximum watts im going to draw is going to be a laptop on charge drawing 65w through the inverter so im guessing this will be increased slightly by the inverter.

Ive read on UKGSer that folk have been planning to run 4x 55w lights so surely the alternator can handle a measly 80w???

Anybody got any hard facts on this as I dont wanna get into the middle of nowhere in Czech Republic and my battery die!!!

Your alternator will be capable of kicking out 600 or 700 watts depending on model. The ignition uses next to nothing, the lights and heated grips are the most consuming, but even with these both switched on they should consume no more than 180 watts.

So in short...

would you say that im safe to charge whatever I want through my accessory socket when the engine in running and im not gonna kill anything???

Don't forget yopu also might have servos and abs, all electric.

why not contact the appliance's manufacturers they possibly will have a 12volt charger.
The truth is out there.

Search on ebay (global) I found USB chargers for everything I own and I just use a USB car charger for everything. I have never run my battery flat!

Power socket 1, with a load rating of max, 60 W (5 A), is intended only for connecting extras mounted in the cockpit or on the handlebars, for example GPS, Roadbook, Tripmaster, etc.

Riders manual page 13 section 1....................

Carry a bucket of sand with you to throw on the fire when it all goes up mate.....!

I'd be really surprised if you'd be able to run the inverter properly.....the'yre very innefficent so you'll be losing 30% (guess) of the power anyway.....far better to buy 12v plugs and a multiplug adaptor to run the stuff instead IMO.

... and much of that inefficiency will be generating heat from the invertor - did you say that it'll be in your tank bag?

The bike's alternator will produce all the juice that you require - but you're suggesting that you're going to channel large amounts through your bike's power socket. The power socket in going to be your pinch point.

All the advice so far is to ditch the invertor - I'd agree. I don't think that I'd want mains voltage flopping around at all, paticularly in a tank bag - near the fuel tank!

When you referred to "blowing things up" and "im not gonna kill anything???" - I don't imagine you'd thought about yourself!

I belive the accessory socket is rated at 5amps and cuts out if the load increases...the socket that is, not the bike!
So the only thing that should overload it would be your laptop.
I presume you are camping and not staying in hotels otherwise a simple mains adaptor would do the trick.
So, if you fitted another accessory socket (if you havnt already) and your gps is hard wired then you shouldnt have any problems.
Just get a 12V power relay from maplins (not expensive) and an appropriate socket on a flying lead stored under your seat and plug your laptop in.
make sure you have an in line fuse to protect your laptop from surges and it should be ok.
You could test the system by loading all the sockets and switching on heated grips and switching indicators to hazard, then press your horn. If the lights dim then your overloading the system.
But the sensible thing to do is only charge one thing at a time.

Power socket.

If your camping try making up an exstension lead with a standard (blue ) 16a
plug on it, may then be possible to plug into a caravan hook up point and cahrge from that. just a silly thought but it has worked before and would not cost much.

Im not quite sure what blue plug you mean but im guessing its a large circular industrial style connector. The ones McD's have hanging from their roofs in the kitchen?

I think ill try and get a USB version of all the chargers I need as I already have a 12v to USB but I still dont have a solution for my laptop and camcorders.

My laptop has around 3.5hrs of battery so im guessing that I can manage on that time as I will be stopping in the odd hotel but I will need to charge my camcorder on the road, almost certainly!!!

Any thoughts on a camcorder being too much for the system???

Thanks for all your feedback so far.

Ive been charging my bits and bobs through the 12V cable on my bike, Ive now put the BMW plug on a four plug 12V outlet. But, now when charge my MP3 player, I hear interference from the bike:spitfire

I believe that is the case with any powered audion equiptment. You need some isolator or something. I have them for the autocom system, got knows what bit of the autocom system but its there coz i remember paying for it.
