:(I recently posted a question about the Adventure screen melting the instrument cluster on my R1200GS and found that this was a common problem and should be covered by the warranty. Well guess what. If I’d purchased an Adventure with exactly the same instrument cluster and had the same problem BMW would replace the cluster under warranty. BMW however do not follow the same principle when it comes to the standard GS with an Adventure screen. According to the agents BMW do not consider it a recognised retro fit part. Well considering I opted to pay more than double the price for a GENUINE BMW Adventure screen as apposed to a Givi or similar, purchased it from a GENUINE BMW dealer and it came in a GENUINE BMW package this doesn’t really ad up!
All GS owners with an adventure screen should be advised to purchase the BMW or Touratech instrument cowl.

Gavin

Sounds like complete tosh to me. If you bought the GSA screen from a BMW dealer and made it clear to them that you would be fitting it to a GS, I fail to to see the problem.

Hopefully you'll have BM insurance and will claim on that ;)

Best get a new screen as well on the insurance as the other one must have been damaged to melt the instruments

I must have missed something here......could someone explain how a screen can melt an instrument cluster please. or point me at a thread about it?? :nenau

I think the theory was that sunlight refracted through the adv screen can cause a hot spot which can burn the instrument cluster.

Heard it happening on sports bike too, similar idea to the magnifying glass lighting a bit of paper

Apparently, it's a known problem (probably happened 6 times) although doubtful it's happened in this country:rolleyes: If you leave the bike in hot sun at a certain angle, the sun is magnified onto the instrument cluster and melts it.

Frankly, I'd be amazed if any warranty would cover something like this so if they pay up, good luck:thumb

Screen

Had this happen on a zx6 i owned with a double bubble screen, acted like a magnifying glass when the sun caught the crease right, and the screen was heavily tinted.

It is a common problem across quite a few bikes. Even my new scoot had a warning to always use the steering lock to avoid such an eventuality.

Bet this has made your day:aidan

Not at all.
It's rather unfortunate and odd, and I do feel sorry for anyone afflicted by it.:comfort

(owning a 1200 I mean :augie)

No seriously....I do have a large degree of sympathy for those suffering from it- and if the item was sold as an official item by a delaer who knew what bike it was destined for, I would have thought that it would come under the old chestnut of 'not being fit for purpose' if it's melting binnacles.
At the very least, there ought to be some sort of warning involved somewhere along the line...its not something I'd heard of before and nor would I ever imagine it happening as a consequence of fitting an official BMW part :(

How queer ................ I noticed ages ago that the instrument cluster casing on my GSA had a mark on it but couldn't work out how it happend. I thought initially that it must have been caused by the Tom Tom lanyard but now I'm not so sure :blast

On a related topic, I left a pair of 'coated' prescription driving glasses on the dash of my car on a hot sunny day. When I came back after work, the coating had crackled up and the glasses were useless.

They were not covered by Specsaver.

THIS SCREEN SEEMS TO STOP THE PROBLEM WITH MELTED CLUSTERS.
