Just thought I'd post an update on the Metzeler ME880 Marathons I had fitted to my Adv during Bike Week at Daytona during the first week in March.
The Service Manager at BMW Daytona suggested that, as I was only using the bike 'on road' and was doing high mileage, these tyres (which are original fit for the K1200LT) would be worth a try - he cited examples of people getting in excess of 20k from a back tyre, as opposed to the 6-8k I was getting from my Tourances.
I gave them a go - let's face it - if he was even half right, it could save me a fortune.
He was wrong. The 'Marathons' turned out to be sprinters - I''ve just run the rear down to the canvas (I'm not joking
) in under 6000 miles. Worse still, the last 1000 miles saw the tyres go from 'Hmm, they're beginning to square off a bit' to 'What's that white thing in the centre of the tread pattern? Aargh! - it's the fabric of the tyre carcase
'.
I had a new pair of Tourances fitted today - and got my bike back. I'd not realised how poor the Marathons had made the handling - it tracked badly across any linear fault on the road-surface (and there are plenty of those over here
)
As an experiment it was worth a try, but I'm back with Tourances and will not be trying the 880s again...
