Michelin AC10's

Having ridden a few rallies over the last few years, does anyone know why AC 10'S are sometimes deemed "Banned/unsuitable" for some of the events ??

my local bikeshop who stocks them, keeps trying to sell me a pair, but when he asks why im not buying them, (because of the above), I cant tell him exactly why !!

Thanks guys

Never heard of them being banned. However I don't think they are FIM approved, so if regs stipulate FIM approved tyres, or require a trials rear tyre as they are kinder to the ground surface they won't be allowed, but that's not anything specific to AC10s...

Yea. I kinda overstepped it slightly when I say "banned" but they are definitely not allowed in some events, although i see they are ok in the forthcoming Beacons rally.

Maybe they arent FIM approved, although still unsure why that would be !

Its to do with the ratio of tread block to the troughs and tread block height, to stop people gaining an advantage from running MX tyres on enduros.

A lot of road legal enduro tyres are FIM approved (and hence cost more) but some aren't. Makes little difference to the ride, it's just a case of either they are just outside of the FIM regs (as road regs are not that different) or inside the regs but the manufacturer hasn't bothered paying to get them approved...

AC10's are raod legal and I have been running a front AC10 at a few events now and at the Keilder I ran an AC10 rear as well

What's the target price for a 120/90 x 18 (rear) AC10?

£48 + £6.50 seems to be as good as eBay gets.

Managed to buy a new AC10 21" front and 18" rear for under £100 delivered.

Costco wanted about £75 just for a rear!

Whats the fascination with AC10's, There crap :nenau Thats why there cheap :augie

They reliably fit with Michelin mousses.

I'm not too bothered about the rear end's grip as long as it has enough tread for some decent traction on most surfaces.

Not in Welsh forests, they are a very good recreational tyre. In fact, not much that is road legal beats them in bog/mud.
The fall down on rock and wear rates on tarred roads in poor, but it's horses-for-courses I guess.
An alternative for trail riding all-rounder is the Mitas C02 rear, one of which I had on my DRZ for over 3500 miles, and it is still here with approx 6mm on it.

This months TBM has an advert for Watling tyres. They are doing 2 rears and a front for £129.
