The good folk at Michelin have been busy over the winter.

A new book of 23 routes, this time dedicated just to the Alps.

A good investment for anyone looking to go to that part of the world.

Nice (and free) route cards for each of the routes, too. Here's the one for the start of the Route Napoleon, as popular a destination as any:

Here's two Mapsource files for the route above. (1) .gbd (2) .gpx

It's quite a nice and simple run of just 177 miles, with a suggested excursion (I assume to a viewpoint, or summat like that) and a loop around a lake. It's quite fun to look at the route in Google Earth and 'fly' along it or drop-in in 'Street view'.

As you will see it uses waypoints as opposed via points and (as it downloads as a GPX file) Mapsource displays the route as a track. If I were to use it I would convert the track into a route and do away with the waypoints.

Still, can't complain. The GPX files are all free to download which, when married to the routecards and a decent map, should go a long way to answer most bods' needs.

I see that the book has free maps, along with suggestions on places to stay and things to see, too. For EUR 16 it looks like a real bargain.

A convenient slim paperback size, just right to sling in a tankbag or pannier.

Clear route cards for each of the 23 routes. You can download the routes, too.

A very good fold-out 1:200,scale map, with each of the 23 routes marked clearly, is included in the book.

Each of the 23 routes has:

Suggestions for hotels: DORMIR

Suggestions on where to eat: MANGER

Suggestions on things to see and do: A VOIR / A FAIR

OK it is in French (that is what they speak, after all) but it is really easy to follow with a bit of imagination.

For anyone off to the Alps it would make a useful addition to any holiday.

We are having a pre holiday panic with this book and I'm sure we are being stupid. How do we download the GPS routes from the viamichelin site? Or is it the Tripy site? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Scroll don to the country / route you need. For instance:

ALLEMAGNE

Bavière, de Mittel-Alm à Telfs TRB / GPX / PDF
Bavière, de Telfs à Salzburg TRB / GPX / PDF

Click on GPX

Save it to your PC

Open Mapsouce

Use Mpasource to find the file and open it up. If you cannot find it, make sure you have selected: 'Show all files'.

You should see the route dispelled as a TRack.

You can send it to your device and ask the device to convert the Track into a Route. This assumes your device will perform that little bit of magical jiggy-pokery.

Or, better still, trace over the Track in Mapsource using the Route tool (amending / adding / deleting) any bits you do not want / need to change and the save it as normal.

Esay peasy.

If you get stuck, let me know (via this thread, please) which route you want and I'll do it for you.

I would be interested to hear what you thought of Michelin's suggested routes. From a look at the book, they seem good.
 
No problem at all. I will let you know how I get on. We are mainly doing the French Alps and the Route Napoleon. I've done Switzerland,Austria and Italy quite extensively before so I am really looking forward to doing the French Alps.
