Got a update option on Windows Defender, so clicked on update..............

When it finished it asked me to "validate"................

shoulda seen it coming...............

Your copy of windows is not authentic, yadayadayada...........

System still works fine as does windows defender.

Today I get a note that Windows Player has an update for me.

Stupidly I click on ok.............been a long day and I'm not paying attention.

Even as i click it I think "uh-oh..............."

New version requires validation...........and my copy isn't yadayadayada

Windows media player won't work until valdated.

Can I get my old version back?

Think this is their new way of trying to clamp down.

And before anyone says buy a proper version :dabone

never heard of that happening before.

system restore is your friend here :)

when that's done and windows update suggests downloading the validation tool again, don't, uncheck it. when it asks if want to be asked again, you don't. job done until MS think up some new wheeze.

there are also a myriad of utilities on interweb that will supposedly make your install appear kosher, but i've not tried any of them.

Well being the biggest pirates of them all, Microsoft don't want what they've worked so hard to steal to be stolen do they?

(The way Gates got hold of the original DOS and Xerox GUI was nothing short of theft - allegedly)

Open your windows meadia player and click on check for updates if it doesn't offer you it. It's not a vliadation tool, it's part of the "update" process.

I get the feeling they're gonna be doing it with all their updates.

:thumb. Sorted. I love it when you screw them with their own help centre :D

Do a search (either here or Google) on 'windows genuine advantage'.

That's the thing you should never get....I've got three machines here all running pukka windows copies, but on principle I won't install this nasty little app......there are ways around it though if your copy of XP isn't quite as legit as it could be...you can fool it into thinking it is, or you can remove it very easily if you want.

You're right though, it's in to stay and they will carry on trying to clamp down on non legit copies.

There is a utility called mublinder that will be of great help to you :thumb

Do a google on it and you should find loads of info
