Hi guys and gals,
Just a quick one, Im going to be welding a pannier frame to the f650 gs 2004. So will I fry the electrics ( non ABS )..Remove the battery obviously but is there any other advice you could offer me?? ...Thankyou Tosh.

i'd remove the fi computer (bms) as well, its the silver thing under the seat (near the front of the bike) the connector for it has a part that needs to slide out before you can remove it from the bike.

Don't know what year your f650 is but on mine the bms is held in place by three torx screws and the locking grip is red, not black.

connect the earth to clean metal, as near to the welding as possible

that way there wont be any electronic issues, but disconnect the battery and computer as extra precaution, never had any issues welding doing the top bit and I never disconnected the battery either :augie

And I'll be steering well clear of this one, as there are more experts on the subject that you could throw a stick at on here:rolleyes:

Just remember the ABS issue on the long way round. Nuff said

Can I ask why your welding your welding the pannier frame to the F650 ?:thumb

Ive been looking at various frames from Gigi and such, Looking at the frames they don't look too difficult to do.
The main thing is getting the legs ( for want of a better word) that come from the frame that the pannier bolts to..
The only way to get the length and angle from the square frame to the bolts on the passenger pegs, rear sub frame near exhaust and brace to the other pannier frame is to do it in situ.
Bolt one end of the leg to the bike frame then weld the other end to the square frame
If anyone can think of a better way please feel free to shoot me down because I'm crap at things like this..
I'm not willing to spend £140 just for a bit of 18mm tubing when a little bit of effort and asking my friends on here will do.....Thanks guys Tosh..

Buy this guy's frame and use it to do the welding on, THEN swap the frames to your own bike? :rob

OK, it would cost you a bit but you should get all the angles right and no risk to your electrics.

As said on the f650 site. Try your best not to weld on your frame. It will cause heat affected zones, left right and centre. So the weld might not fail but the metal surrounding it will. The factory heat treats the metal afterward to remove residual stresses as much as possible and even then there are cases of subframes failing due to load and fatigue cracking.

I am with you on the make vs buy, more rewarding and such but you can easily pick up second hand pannier rails on ebay for40-80 quid. Check the german ebay especially around this time of year. (www.ebay.de). BTW Kappa are also givi compatible without the price tag.
