Today, mostly in the interests of research, i gave my panniers a good wash down, so they look good for the BMF! Well, i gave the front lower mounting bolt a good pressure soaking and....
my panniers leaked!
It looks like the water is ingressing on the pannier via capillary action.

Solution???

Simple!!!

I got two pieces of old cycle inner tube (motorcycle tubes may be too thick), cut them into square-ish shapes, cut a small hole in the middle and placed them over the bolt, between the pannier itself and the mounting bracket (make sure you do it up good 'n' tight).
I then gave it double the soaking i had done previously.

Result???

Dry panniers!!!

Hope you find this useful Mike and that it works for you too. Anyone else with Vern's panniers, feel free to do likewise if you encounter the same problem.

Similar solution to the mastic sealant I've used - I'll maybe give it a go next time they have to come off for some reason. Glad to hear you don't think I'm making it up any more...

Darn that was quick Mike! To set the record straight, i didn't think you were telling porkies about your leak, i just hadn't had a leak on mine till today. Best thing about this solution is that it's easy to add/remove the panniers because you don't have to keep on slapping mastic about.
