I am looking for a 1150GS and wonder if anyone can advise what is considered high mileage. The boxer engine is alleged to be bullet proof so what are likely to be the first things to need replacing. Does high mileage mean low selling price?

Hi Rhodda, GSs have a price structure all of their own, you decide if it's worth the money or not. Not many problems to worry about with any of the 4V motors, unless you're really unlucky and buy a dog:rolleyes: My 1100 has got 146000miles on it at the moment, but some of the guys in the States have 250k+ on theirs. Pay your money, and enjoy.:D
Oh yes, welcome to the site as well:beerjug:

11k and just run in

Hi Just bought my GS with 11k on the clock. I know previous owner had remus pipe and engine chipped with KN filter.
So i believe he ran her a little harder than i do..

She smokes a tiny amount on first startup and never owning a BMW boxer before i was a bit concerned at first..

But i have done 450 miles since owner ship, just found this site and have read others.. I believe you have to go a long way to find a shattered boxer from what i can tell, and if you do, i am sure there will be other signs of wear ie, crash damage on the bike as well.

If you have a look at the general state of mileage on old bikes some have "mega" miles by inline four standards.. and are still kicking. I woud say, find a bike, ride it, makesure she starts from cold and the frame is good.
If you happy to pay the cash pay it,, otherwise keep looking. But Boxers are not cheap, even with a 100k on the clock..

Does anyone know the record for mileage? Just a thought.. ?

I thought the same about mine went to speak to SPC they asked "do you leave it on the side stand?" apparently a little oil will leak into the left had pot causing some smoking on start up.

Any one else confirm this?

HG,

theres a bundle of threads on oil consumption here ... have a quick search. One of the last appends I remember was exactly that, and once parking more often on centre stand (even on the pub or sunday run) means less oil consumption and therefore I suspect less smoke at start-up.

Cheers.. will try it

Cheers guys, i do tend to use the side stand.. hmm will try the centre more often.
But have only had her 5 days, so cant comment on the oil consumption.
But she doesnt smoke on heavy throttling, and only smokes a tiny amoutn first 30 secs of startup.

Though i have been warned that it is wise to keep and eye on the old oil levels as the engines do use oil..

Cheers

John aka rocks..

Milage

Had to let go of my first 80 gs a B registered at about 150 000 miles only because of negligence on my behalf.

99 mod.1100 just run in with 40k on,cleans up like new every time despite riding all year round.Sold it last year, bought a british bike, sold it soon after and bought another 1100 (ok my old one back!)Not perfect but does everything and looks great.
Forget the mileage, get one and ride it cos you can,not like a sunday afternoon toy for sunny days logging a couple of thou per year
