How many miles has any one done in one day? what would be considered a sensible distance to cover on motorway roads ?

Depends on the person.
I regularly do IJmuiden - Offenburg which is about 660km. With coffee/lunch/coffee stops it takes about 8 hours usually.
Pita on a GSA seat; ok on a Wunderlich seat!
But it is a study of Dutch and German dual carriageways and motorways, not much sightseeing if you want A-B.

Years ago I went from Dumbarton - John o'Groats - Shaftesbury in 24hrs on a LMII which was about 1020miles. Got the award (backed by timed and dated receipts) but enjoyable it was not.

i've done john o'groats to lands end , and then driven back to south london . i clocked 1275ls in 22 hrs...but i was falling asleep whilst driving , and stopping at every petrol station for a fag and a can of coke , to stay awake .
not clever and not smart , but i've done it .

my normal target is a maximum mileage of 400mls/day on good roads and not more than 10hrs , whichever comes first.

500

Did two 500mile days last year Essex down to perpignon, not gonna do that again, took the fun right out of that holiday........

In Eastern Europe or anywhere?

To answer your question, the world record for circling the globe on a motorcycle is about 19.5 days, which is roughly a 1000 miles a day.... for 19 and a half consecutive days.... If you think that is sensible, there's your bench mark.

Sensibly, 400-500 a day on decent motorways is reasonably easy. It depends what time you start, how often you stop and (not unnaturally) what time you want to finish. A bit might depend on the weather too, stinking hot or lashing with rain or freezing with snow will eat into your endurance perhaps.

700 is not impossible, neither is a 1000. We did Budapest to London in a day, which is over a 1000. Is that sensible? Who really cares? Nobody died and the bikes didn't complain too loudly.

So, there you go..... take YOUR pick. You have probably been on a motorway in your life, yes? What do YOU imagine (if you screw your eyes tight shut) is sensible for a daily mileage?

The most I've done in about 36 hours is 1300 miles which was Walsall to Scotland to do the Ariel Owners Club Rally, which is a scatter rally, and back to Cambridgeshire. Wouldn't do it again though, I was falling asleep on the bike and ended up giving myself a bad neck due to the turbulence off the fairing on my VFR 750. This was about 12 years ago and I still have the dodgy neck, still got the VFR which is standing the test of time better then me!

Sensible distances depend on the standard of the roads, the traffic, the weather and the style of bike you are riding are just a few factors to take into consideration but 10 to 12 hours in the saddle is enough for me.
