iv'e aquired a computer for the little one but it's got windows millenium on ;
but mine has got xp on it how do i go about wipeing it clean and putting xp on it .

back everything that's important up.

have a cup of tea

back up everything that you forgot the 1st time

make a boot disk
boot machine from boot disk to a dos prompt
format C: /U

when it's finished, remove floppy boot disk, insert XP cd rom, turn power off then back on

away to go

Before you....

format your hard drive I would advise you check the PC is capable of running XP, to run the new operating system. XP requires a minimum 233MHz CPU and 64MB of RAM, CD Drive, 2.0GB hard disk space, that is just for the operating system.

To run XP reasonably well you should have at least 128MB RAM and a 20GB Hard drive, although it will run on smaller drives, but the smaller you go the less software you can put on it.

This is a free download that will check both your software & hardware is XP capable.

I am assuming the PC is quite old, or am I making the wrong assumption

you can do format install from XP cd, you don't need a floppy boot disc unless you have a (crap) hookey, non booting XP cd.
(good) hookey, booting discs are fine i'm reliably informed

do a complete reinstall not an upgrade.

basically, back everything up as mentioned, insert XP cd & boot pc from cd (you may need to alter the boot order in BIOS to achieve that*), follow instructions on screen, it's a piece of piss

*press delete during boot to access BIOS & set CDROM to be first in boot order in "basic CMOS set up" from memory.

ps. you'll want a lot better spec than that above to run nicely in the real world. that's MS's over optomistic spec to part punters from their money.
i'd suggest 500/600PIII, 128 MB RAM (256 much better) as minimum.

thank you most kindley for your responses but the hard drive in this little baby is to small.
ah well got it for nowt enyway look's like i'm in for a new hard drive in this comp and donate mine to his

cheers anyway.

i'm concerned that if your hard drive is too small for XP then other componants are not up too the job.
20GB HDDs have been the minimum normally fitted since about 1999ish. PC's built earlier than that may struggle with running XP.
