I replaced the cord on my home made heated vest today after having trodden on the old plug...I made it longer at the same time so I have more movement when I've plugged it into the lower of my PTO sockets.....

I toyed with the idea of using the old cord from a deceased BWM waistcoat..you know the ones that keep failing and popping fuses????

I reckon the fault is in the waistcoat though, rather than the lead.....which is nice and curly, waterproof and has the high/low leds on it.......

So here's the question for you electrickery bods....

The BWM cord goes from two wires from the plug, into the remote control and its PCB, then out to the waistcoat end plug in four wires, two thin red one and two thicker black ones....(I don't know which was wired to positve on the original plug...I cut it off and re used it a while back but I'd expect it to be red live:( )

I'm thinking the remote circuitry just gives different amounts of power to the waistcoat, with two seperate circuits (live down the thick one, earthing back through the thin) so that when on low power, one circuit is on, then goingup to full power both circuits are on??

(makes sense but the thicker wires are black and the thin ones red :nenau)

So what would happen if I twisted the two thick ones together and the two thin ones..can I use this cord, and would it still give me adjustable power to the waistcoat ( a home made kit one that's far better than anything I've tried before!)

Over to you guys ;) :thumb

Put a meter across the wires to find out which ones make a circuit. That should give you a clue as to what they do. The cold tails to the heating element should be the same size, not a smaller one for the return as you suggest.

Erm they are though......I'd guess the two black wires are .75mm and the red ones half that :nenau

why leave the pcb in circuit ...just use the cable or have i missed something
-cos it would be useful to have a thermostatic control and a visual indicator or it being on and at high or low setting ;)

My guess is the two thicker wires will be one circuit and the smaller ones another. A meter across them will prove it :thumb

Hmmm could well be...I'll fit a plug or whack it on a battery and find out tomorrow :thumb

you'll need a Thermistor to measure temp in the jacket.... and the right value of one too

Naaa...I'll just put it on and see if it gets hotter :D

NOOOO, test it with a meter first to find out which ones make a circuit through the elements or you'll end up blowing fuses.

paging shugie

he's just rewired his & worked the connections out :)

might have done it the other way round though

Don't worry...I've got a fancy battery box thingy with a trip on it....I can sit here in the warm and make things go pop rather than out in the fog and have to go rooting around under the saddle for fuse 5 :)

I love it when little bits of wire go fizz and glow, don't you?? :D

What's all this fuses stuff about? Mine is just straight into the plug, and into the beak socket. No volume nowt. That's how it came, and it seems to be fine.:nenau

This thing half way down the cord is what I want to incorporate into my home made one ;)
