Model year 2017 gearbox

Perhaps you didn't realize that this is the first time that BMW acknowledges changes to the LC gear box and drive shaft. As BMW anounced changes, obviously intended to improve the GS transmission, many of us are curious to learn what experience those who have ridden the new model had. I, for one, am one of those.

Regards,

Andre

BMW press release

Searching the web for R1200GS spec changes 2017 & found this in a BMW press release "Technical changes to the liquid-cooled boxer models.

When the new model year starts in August 2016, the engines of the liquid-cooled boxer models will be subject to supplementary technical changes as well as the application of EU4 measures and the addition of sidelights as required by law.

Like the R 1200 GS Adventure, all liquid-cooled boxer models will now be fitted with a judder damper on the transmission output shaft. New features also include a revised selector drum actuator, transmission shafts and transmission shaft bearing. An OBD indicator lamp in the cockpit has been added to meet EU4 requirements."

Would also be interested to see how much improvement has been made.

I'm now up to 600 miles on my bike, and the gearbox is the smoothest on any of my boxer powered bikes I've previously owned.:beerjug:

Dear sirs and mss, I would kindly suggest returning to the original question: is the model year 2017 gearbox better than those of earlier water cooled R1200gs. My story is this: In 2013 my trustworth R1200GSA
from year 2006 got 80 000 kms and I thought I will change to a brand new water cooled gs. However the test ride revealed that the new clutch-gearbox combination was noisy especially from 0 to 1 and 1 to 2 gears. So I bought the last brand new air-oil cooled gs 1200 in Finland. However, the wc model has its advantages and I again consider the wc. I have no possibilities to test ride a 2017 model so I ask your experiences ☺

You have the best GS....

just picked up my 2017 GS adventure triple black,,,coming from a 2013 GS i have to say the gearbox teaks are outstanding, quite simply slick as a gearbox can get,
I also opted for the quick shifter as i use that on my S1000XR and i have to say it works better than on my chain drive XR

Z-Man, You can start getting excited, I have now covered 1200 miles on my 2017 T/B and it is Sublime, and without doubt my best GS-LC yet!

However the T/C is a great bike too!

I rode a New GS1200 last week all day from AJ's it was 2017 model with 3 miles only on the clock when we left AJ's having had 7 1200 GSA's and I'm on my 2nd LC TE model, i have to confirm the Gerabox is smother than my bike i Bought March this year and have covered 10k miles on so far. Yes its a lot better gearbox but not "Wank off" its just better less clunky not as bad a CLUNK! when you drop it into 1st. But that don't bother me anyway. I have the quick shifter as did the loaner and both are as good to me.During the ride i felt the 2017 GS was much better than my 2016 GSA was the slow riding 30mph and slow speeds riding through some villages its noticeably smoother on the lower end at 2nd gear 3rd gear etc not chugging just a hell of a lot smoother. I wonder is that a software change? maybe it will come available to all in the service intervals? Having just visited and seen a GS birth in the Berlin factory I'm not sure.Anyway still there still both great sheds to ride IMHO I still prefer the GSA..

Cheers for that ? One think I forgot to say re 2017 GS model although fcuk all to do with gearboxes was the Clocks they have no grey border and the numbers are bigger defo easier to read. Even a old git like me can see em but they have Nicked the turn indicators replace ing the Twp as in one left one right turn lights to now a small single light which is tiny! Joined together l/r A quick way to notice new clocks is that the RPM counter now has a blue circle in the unit.

Big D or shameless

I have a Sept 2015 GS non ESA ,my first BMW.l fancied a change to the GSA TB so had a new demo for 24 hrs and I have to say the gearbox was no different to my bike all I can say is early GS must have been dire.l couldnt really tell the difference with the ESA either.Being only a short arse it was too tall for me ,surprising how those few extra mm make a difference.

I picked my TB GSA up on Tuesday afternoon and today's breakfast run took me through 600 miles. This is my 1st BMW anything so I cannot compare to previous GS/GSA models however I find the transmission to be very smooth, so smooth in fact that having come the the GSA from a clunky Ducati I found myself double checking the display to ensure the transition had taken place at first. The quick shift also progresses through the gears very smoothly on open roads.

My eldest said to me "there must be some reason why they [gs's] are so popular". Having ridden this for a bit I am now beginning to comprehend why.

I agree they are great bike,I also have a 2012 ZZR1400 now that's a slick gearbox !
