These look handy. I’m looking for something to transfer between bikes and cars.

Monimoto 7, or 9?

I have a 7 in the car. And a 5 (old, cylinder shaped) in the GS.

Thinking of replacing the GS one with a new one. I’d be inclined to stick to the 7 as battery life is significantly longer, despite a bigger ballache when changing batteries.

Keep in mind, when activated, the 9 will run for less time than a 7 as well.

If water is an issue though: 9 all the way.

Essentially, for me the discriminants are:

Battery life to be considered over ease of recharging/battery replacing, and potential water ingress.
Yes, USB charging is easy, but if I have to take apart half the bike to reach the monimoto… doesn’t change much recharging via usb or swapping a pack of batteries, and the batteries on my 7 lasted 2 years… they say the 9 might last up to 1 year.

That said, my GS also had quite a few water crossing and the monimoto 5 was exposed and had little trouble. But wouldn’t push my luck too much.

If you're to transfer it between vehicles it won't be a problem recharging it when you change it over. The 9 is much smaller and doesn't take that long to recharge. the 9 lasts easily a year before it needs charging.

I do not see, size apart, the 9 as this massive, or must-have improvement.
Connectivity is the same.

You pay for smaller size, waterproofing and the battery + charging capabilities.
As commented above, the upside of this will depend on use and location.

I you can hide in a location where you can easily reach to a cable to recharge it, then you can top every 8/10 months or so, no hassle, worth it.
If reaching it is more complex... at this stage changing the batteries as well might not be an issue and gives you more time between changes.
If you are moving it across vehicle, the 9 might be useful as you can charge it each time you move it around.

Above all, it is a very good device.
Their support is top notch too.

That sums it up quite nicely. (y)

I have two 8's and one 7.

The smaller 8 has it's advantages because of it's size.

I use the 9 and it works fine. Just picked up a second one in the BF sale to use on my other bike.

I have two 7's one on each Guzzi and am really happy with them, I've had them since they were released and have moved them between multiple bikes and I just swap out the batteries every year or so. The new app for monimoto has much better reporting on battery life now to, so easier to make a decision on when to swap them out on the 7.

I'm still on my original tubular one and it still works perfectly after about 8 years. Just replaced both batteries after over a year of service. Use Varta ones.
Their customer service is excellent.

Hi,
I chose the 9 and have one on each of my bikes due to its size, weatherproofing.

The 9 is rechargeable whereas the 7 has replaceable batteries if that affects your choice.

I just found this when i did a web search:

The main differences are size, battery, and water resistance: the Monimoto 9 is smaller and has a higher IP68 rating, but uses a rechargeable battery with a shorter 12-month life, while the Monimoto 7 is larger, uses replaceable AA batteries with a 24-month life, and has an IP65 rating. Both trackers offer the same core functionality, including theft alerts and GPS tracking via the mobile app

Just a note for us older users.
I, too, have an older 5 in my GS. The cylindrical one.

Works a treat. But we have to keep in mind that is a bit slower (waking up and getting a fix) and also uses 2G.
It's ok for now, but 2G will start to be sundown (disabled) starting from ~2029 (varies from network to network).

No rush, but there's an incentive to upgrade at some point over the next couple of years I guess.

I'm considering replacing my 5 in the coming months, just deciding between 7 or 9 based on the reasoning above (I have a couple of different places where to put it on the GS).
But I'm in no rush.

I spoke about "upgrading" to them some time ago, and they can transfer the SIM subscription from old to new device seamlessly.
