Gail-Force & Mort came to leave Perth this morning & Gails GS won't start.

A few weeks ago Gail ran Bike very low on fuel..on way to garage next morning it started to misfire then stopped.
Presuming it had simply run out of fuel Mort added fuel from container then with some reluctance Bike started albiet with slight misfire.
Got GS home.. tank flushed, new fuel filter fitted & all well for approx 1,500 miles.

This morning Gails bike either won't start or starts, misfires then stops.

Bike has half tank fuel..Mort mentioned when he turns ignition on rev counter goes 'haywire'

Any idea as to what problem is?

I can contact Mort by phone to relay any advice/suggestions:augie;)

I believe a haywire revcounter and starting / running problems like you describe usually means Hall Sensor.

However someone like Steptoe will be able to cast more light on this.

sounds like a duff Hall effect sensor

Tuned in had similar things going on wi his till I fitted a second hand one of motorworks and it started immediately

As a matter of interest is the battery good? Was she trying to start it with a low battery recently?

I have a wee theory of electrickery going on and I'd like to know from the collective if they had Hall sensors fail was thier battery discharged

But I reckon it's the Hall effect sensor

To Test:----- Bike on centre stand Plugs out and in top gear

Rest plugs in their caps on the eng bars so they can ground out to complete their circuit

Stick a brick in front of front wheel so it can't roll off it

Then rotate the back wheel making sure the side stand is up

you should see sparks at the plugs and hear the pump priming if not then they would seem to be at fault

If you haven't nipped the cables then you probably need new ones

Definitely the hall sensor. exact same symptoms when mine died. chap who fitted new one ran a diagnostic and that confirmed it. The 'bouncey' rev counter is the giveaway. £140 or so for a new one and an hour to fit. Its possible that the old one can be revamped. Quite often (though not in the case of mine) the fault is in the wiring. I ordered a new one from Motorworks - arrived next day.

If they are stuck in perth try Sandy bloys motorcycles-01738 440444. they will certainly try to help if possible.

I don't know...can't ask Mort as he's on his Bike travelling home

AA are bringing Gail's Bike home

Thanks all for help & info:beerjug:

Thanks for all the help chaps.
We made it back home on my bike and Gails is following on an AA truck:rolleyes:
I stopped off at a BMW dealership on the way home and they confirmed what you all say so my hands are back in my pockets again:blast

I might be inviting a lightning strike here but if you own a properly working 1100 and have a fresh Hall sensor, you have little to worry about for a bit :augie
Stewart :)

Hall sensor failier confirmed and now replaced...thanks again peeps.

Have you got the old one still.

If you can confirm the wiring is fecked you could sell it on here and someone could recon it.
