Mosel Valley and Black Forest Q's

Worth going, nice roads and countryside?

I have got a spare 8 days in July, don't like doing too many miles in a day and thought Belgium, Luxenbourg, Mosel valley, Black Forest and home would be a good little round trip.

Black Forest is nice - I've stayed nr Baded Baden. Not much in the way of night life but other than that it's lovely.

Very much so...

Just NW of the Mossel is the Eiffel region home of the famous Nurburgring. Apart from the Ring its really nice round there with excellent roads too. The Mossel Has oodles of accomodation and well worth a visit but the further south you go the better it gets. The Black Forrest is just superb, great roads, great mountain scenery, great towns, great beer, great gateaux, great people,,, you can't go wrong.

The worst part of you suggested trip (imho) is Belgium and Luxembeg as its not so scenic and the roads are busy with traffic. I would grin and bare it and get to Germany asap???

Looking at the Michelin map there are lots of green roads along the Lux / Germany border.

Did the Eifel & Mosel areas a few years ago - lovely scenery & some good roads. We stopped in a little place called Beilstein not far from Cochem - a a little bit commercialised but well worth a visit - ENJOY !!

Ardennes in Belgium has some lovely roads and lots of WW2 history arodun Bastogne, etc. Only 1/2 day ride from most of the Channel ports!

Black Forest is nice but I find the twisty minor roads and views hemmed in by too many trees! The Vosge mountains on the French side of the Rhine are more open with some lovely roads; worth a visit.

The Union of European Motorcyclists website lprovides 13 ADAC maps which show good riding roads in these areas. I have ridden a lot of these and they are generally well surfaced & light traffic. A good basis for route planning. http://www.uem-online.org

The German UKGSer section ride out turned out to be more of a "stay in" this year (there's too much snow here now for a decent ride before the end of the year). Should we try again next year, or give it up as a bad joke

There is lots of twisty fun to be had in that area Jim.

The fun starts south east of the line Liège / Brussels / Charleroi.
From the Belgian coast to there, it's boring, flat and crowded.

Luxembourg has great roads as well.
Then Eifel & Black Forest is great, Vosges as well.
I have a slight preference for the Vosges, but that's personal.

I could show you around a bit if you like.

Black Forest

I did the Black Forest a couple of years ago after my foray to The 'Ring. The 'Schwarzewald' is a great place for biking (although it doesn't have the same sense of scale as the Alpes or Pyrenees). We were advised by the Ring's Baron to head towards Titisee if we wanted to find the best roads and scenery, and I can fully endorse his recommendation! But I agree with Squid - the nightlife is a bit lame (we came back from the pub at 10pm expecting to finish the night off with a few beers at the hotel, only to find that the hotel was shut and se were locked out!).

Mosel roads are pretty good but much better later in the year for the wine festivals in bernkastel and cochem.
