MOT-ITV Spain

Hi guys,

Since I'm taking my gs 1200 (2014) back to Spain with me, I will be changing the british plate for a Spanish one shortly....

I assume that the main problem will be the headlamp...and its bloody price coz it's a LED one if it would need to be changed.

Anyone has any experience on this? Any way to "by pass" the problem? Any suggestion will be more than welcome.

No need to change, the beam pattern is straight ahead, without a left or right bias.

A few years ago my mate looked at doing the same with his old GPZ750 to keep it at his flat in Spain, he reckoned it was financially unviable due to the high costs of registration and importation taxes.

Not sure if things have changed but I would look into it

Yeah,

that's why I am asking about getting the MOT down in spain, the rest of things will be "fixed cost", MOT could be 35 Euros (standart cost) or a grand due to the headlamp...

I'm moving in a few weeks time, so I need to get as much info as I can now in oder to make a decision.

Not sure about import taxes.... since the bike already belongs to me, it might be free of import taxes..

I think you would need to do something about the dipped beam , as it will be throw to the left,and affect on coming traffic. I imported a bike from the UK into Gib with no problems 3 years ago. You can buy those plastic stick on things,that go on the headlight glass for driving/riding on the continent. Can't help with the duty , no I.V.A. to pay as it's been paid in the UK.

Exported my R80/7 to Spain from UK in 1991, had to have a engineer do a tech report inc a drawing with dimensions weight etc. Even though the same bike was in the showroom of "Fersan BMW" in Alicante just across the road from the layby where the report was done .
Think it was because I was using an English "Gestore" who knew jack shit about importing bikes .
Cost a fair bit, mostly fines as I recall, due to the gestore not meeting deadlines , but got the spanish plates in the end . Did nothing to the headlight until it was pointed out at an ITV 9 years later that it was shining the wrong way but still didnt fail , try to get the ITV at a mobile station during a rainstorm , or ask around which station passes anything .

I'll try to do things properly, but as orbit suggested, I might end up using a "user friendly" MOT.

You will require a European Certificate of Compliance (I think that's what it is called), contact BMW UK and they'll be able to supply it.

I just emailed customer service U.K regarding the certificate of conformity.

I phoned a dealership in Spain last night, they told me that they will have to sort the certificate for me, since it has to be requested from the country in wich the bike will get the new plate.....they might be trying to get some money from me... Let's wait for Customer service UK's answer...

I think that you can run it on UK plates for up to six months anyway.

Insurance won't be valid after 3 months.... Just in case, it will be better to stay legal, so I think that I will keep the British one for the first 3 months....

Other question is..... if I am shipping the bike, how would they know when the bike left the country??

The date you leave the UK only becomes relevant if you have a claim. Then they will look for proof of shipping or ferry ticket etc etc.

Just a thought, with the €-£ rate being so good and Spain suffering high unemployment is it worth checking out bike prices locally.

Working on that in paralel corsicandreamer.

However, I did the same research in late 2013 begining of 2014, and bikes were far more expensive over there.

As you said, Exchange rate is very good nowadys, so we'll see when they come back with a price.
