Hi

My r1150 gsa is due for its first MOT soon at SBW Hertford.

I have replaced the original bulb set up and fitted HID lamps to both Dipped and Main.

The question is will it pass an MOT with them fitted?

No problems with my 35W HIDs at the MOT. I did warm up both beams beforehand, just to make sure they started promptly.

The law says (and there's something on a govt website somewhere) that HIDS fitted to a motor vehicle should have auto-adjustment and a cleaning system fitted to be legal.

Therefore IF (and its a big IF as I fon't know how far the check goes) checking the legality of lights is part of the MOT, then technically, one could fail.

Having said that, this depends on what the tester knows, what sort of mood he's in, whether he like you and how eagle his eyes are. Who's to say that yer HIDS don't look like some of the blue "fashion" bulbs?

on a car they only need auto adjust /clean if they are OEM parts

you'll have no problems so long as they are adjusted right

The law says (and there's something on a govt website somewhere) that HIDS fitted to a motor vehicle should have auto-adjustment and a cleaning system fitted to be legal.

That's a construction and use regulation for 4-wheeled vehicles and doesn't apply to bikes.

What's more likely to be a sticking point is the time that it takes HIDs to warm up and get up to a suitable brightness. Since I fitted mine, I've just got in the habit of 'warming up' the full beam for when I might need it later.

Mine has passed for the last two years at two different testing stations, no problem....:thumb

Think it must be just 4wheelers, the new 1200GT and LT can come with factory HID fitted but nether has a headlamp wash or auto adjust other than the normal manual beam adjuster.

After I had fitted mine Motorrad Central checked the alignment and adjusted it FOC. At MOT time no problem at all.
