motobatt

Motobatt MB51814 is 183mm long x 80mm wide x 170mm high
Battery holder on early (2000) non abs, non heated grips R1150GS is 183mm long x 78mm wide and will accommodate a 170mm high battery with ease.
2mm is the difference that means a Motobatt MB51814 will not fit my bike and certain others.
It is out with the tools to adjust the battery holder to suit the most common battery size.

I drilled the out the spotwelds that hold the vertical part of the bracket and cut the horizontal bars.
Rewelded the vertical part of the bracket at 85mm from the opposite side and made and welded spacers into the horizontal bars.
Sandblasted it and painted.
Waiting for the battery to arrive in the post to see if it all fits.
Can pack the battery if its a b ity loose.

well done Adrian
good to get the dimensions and hear your solutions

This is confusing the hell out of me - I fitted a Motobatt to my 2001 R1150GS (ABS etc - large alternator model) with no bother at all about 3 years ago.

Maybe Motobatt dimensions have changed?

Apologies for what seems to have been duff information! :blast

Fitted a Motbatt MB51814 into my 2002 1150GS (ABS & Hgrips) just under 2 yrs ago. Wasn't happy as it was within mm's of the bottom of the petrol tank !!! when the tank was replaced. Placed some inner tubing to shroud the positive terminal for peace of mind. During this recent cold-spell, the battery gave up the ghost, despite being trickle charged. Took it to be tested and it would not even take a charge; totally 'kaput'. Retailer said I was just unlucky.

I'd never buy another AGM battery.

On the positive side I'm glad it failed now, than while out in the wilderness somewhere.

Anyone else had problems with their Motobatt AGM battery ! or indeed finding a replacement battery to fit the restricted head height of the battery box on a 2002 1150GS (ABS).
