Hi folks I have my first gs1200 purchased new and is a 2007 model It now has 3000 miles on the clock and generally I am very happy with it. However I am finding a lot of vibration at motoway speeds. Generally I would say between 4000 - 5000 rpm. It really is becoming uncomfortable and causing pins and needles in my hands. Is this something I am going to have to live with or is my bike excessively vibey. I spoke to my dealer today and they say that it is not properly run in yet and if I am not happy at 6000 service to raise it then.

Also I have used half litre of oil since 600 service again is this normal.

I am not really winging just looking for clarification that all is ok.

Make sure your tyre pressures are OK and have a mess with the suspension. It may help with the tingles. I get a slight tingle through my throttle hand after an hour or so on the motorway but mines nicely run in at 32k.

They do have a history of oil usage but always check the level 3 times!! You can get 3 different levels when warm, cold or on stand!! Neither of my boxers use a drop of oil:thumb.

'Part of the ownership experience old chap'

My Mar 07 bike was the same but I have now covered 10,000 miles and I don't notice it as much. Maybe because it's run in or my sensitivity to the vibration has disappeared.

I seriously considered getting rid but I'm glad I didn't.

Thank to you both for you quick replies. re the oil that puts my mind at rest.
Tyre pressures were ok as I check this regularly. Suspension I will look into. I can live with it on A roads where the pace is changing regularly. It is just the constant speed on motor ways/dual carriage ways that it becomes a 'pain in the ''hands''

Cheers

My 06 felt tight and vibey above about 4200 rpm for about the first 5000 miles. Now its "worn in" it uses much less oil, and spins much more freely at high revs, and the vibes that were there for the first year or so have gone.

Strange but true.

Just give it time ... then take it for a few highway blasts up around 120 mph ... Seems to have done mine the world of good. Prior to that it was just unpleasant above about 75 mph

+1

08 model 750 miles - same issue on the motorway!

Need at least 10,000 miles to bed in, then much smoother though thereafter accurate throttle body balance is absolutely essential to keep the vibes at bay. When spot on there's virtually no noticable vibe even through the 4000-5000rpm range.

Mine did both when I first got it (used oil and vibed in the rev range you describe) With 27000 on the clock neither happen any more.:thumb

mine used about 1 litre per 1,000 miles for the first 3 or 4 thousand.... now it don't use hardly anything (17,000 miles)

as for the vibes, I used to get the tingly sensation... either they have gone away or my fingers have adjusted... but again, now its fine...

:aidan

having ridden twins for years the tingles are normal...my solution: a pair of rather natty silk under gloves (under your normal riding gloves). Works for me. ;)

mmm... I've heard a rumour that the 1100 and 1150 chaps wear silk under things...:eek::eek: I'm just glad we 1200 peeps only need the gloves :thumb

I have the tingling fingers/hand problem. Had it almost all the time I was learning to ride last year on my DAS. I kept being told to relax my grip and it would go away. It didn't :(

Bought a gs just after passing my test. Have done just shy of 6k miles, tingles almost all the way, nearly to the point of not being able to brake properly . I tried neoprene grip wraps to try to cushion my hand and o rings to increase the diameter of the grip, no joy :spitfire

Today a revelation. I changed the way I grip the throttle when the tingling started and they went away  :JB

I will continue to experiment to improve the situation but I am a much happier bunny today after nearly 200 miles with little or no tingles :thumb2

I was going to say.................you are perhaps gripping to firm and hard! (oerrr!! - another double entendre!)

Agree with all the above. It's not run in until 12,000 miles and won't fully settle down until about then. As others say check your tires and suspension settings or stay above 5k for now:augie

Also try relaxing more and keep arms and hands loose on the bars. Makes for better and smoother riding chap.....:thumb2
