mounting aerial on top box

miles away

Guest
i'm thinking of mounting my radio inside my top box, with a hard wired power and audio connection. also want to mount the aerial for my radios on the lid of the top box. can anyone think of any reasons why not to do this. (be as obscure as you like!)
cheers

Its illegal because the pmr licence is based on the handheld radio have a fixed aerial .

Hmm, well I think unless your top box is large enought to close whilst you are in there performing this act with a radio, I think that they might get you under the public obscenities laws.

GAWD! is this right? I thought it was on power output.

I know where I would want to stick the bloody aerial if they nicked me.

Shootings, stabbings, drugs, in fact general mayhem on the streets and......WHOOOO, sorry! think I'm going off on one.....:spitfire

Is it a metal top box or plastic? Is it a long aerial or a short stubby one? (1/4 wave or helical)

A short stubby one can work quite well if its mounted on the underside of a metal top box, away from the exhaust. It will not draw attention to the fact the box contains radio equipment and you can still strap stuff to the top

With a plastic top box you may as well leave the radio, complete with aerial inside, upright if possible

More details needed really for best advice

radio will work on around 470MHZ (not PMR, so no power issues) thinkin of getting sonic comms to make me a mount that will sit ontop of the aluminium bmw top box. aerial will be a standard 9cm stubby UHF aerial, which will screw into the mount on the top box. if you open the top box there will just be a length of cable terminating in a connection to screw into the top of the radio. radio will be on an anti vibration mount, with hard wires for power and intercom, all aerospace grade kit, wiring, connections etc...

I know someone that made an aerial mount from a flatpack spanner which fixed on to a bolt at the side of the seat on an 07 GSA. Very neat job, radio stored under seat.

made an aerial from a flatpack spanner??????????? i'm confused

I know someone that made an aerial mount from a flatpack spanner ....

It was just the mount! As i'm told it fittd the aerial and bolt by the seat perfect - Ikea flatpack I believe... You heard it here first!

come on guys.............. anyone else got any input, or other reasons why not to do it..

thanks very much dave.... my installation would comply with these guidelines. take it the only reason people thought it would be illegal was because they thought i was using pmr radios..

Do you think that might be because you didnt make it clear in your first post ??

It is a fair assumption that you were planning to fit a pmr 446 when the majority of radios used by motorcyclist for pleasure are of that type.

But I think you knew that ;)

i think we all make certain assumptions whether right or wrong. from now on i'll make it perfectly clear which radios ( not pmr 446 license free, not marine band fm, not citizens band, not high frequency, not low frequency, not vhf, not data transfer, not broadcasting equipment, not an fm or am or even lw radio, not satcom) i mean... that better!!!!!!!!!!!!

nice to see the post finally got some attention!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:augie
