Moving files from a PC to a Mac

they are folders, but you don't have permission to open them

I think you might be too. Here's another screenshot of mine which shows you the first identity I set up (AndrewBrazieriMac) and as you can see, just iike you, it hasn't given me permission to access those files. 'Andrew' was created when I did the migration. IIRC it is important that the files are in the right Identity. i.e. - the User that has the little house icon against it because this is your default identity. I think a quick chat in the shop or a call to Apple support should straighten this out for you.

Cookie, just been through your suggestion but it doesn't seem to want to give me rights to view what's in the file.

Hoping to nip into the shop tomorrow and get them to sort/help.

To cut a long story short I had the computer wiped and then I reloaded Mavericks blah, blah, blah.

Migration assistant was run right from the beginning before set-up and everything is now as it should be

Thanks for all the suggestions and help, I got there in the end; now to unlearn Windows and relearn 'the way of the Mac'
