mp3 virgin

Hi,just bought a 1 Gig mp3.Never used one before.I have downloaded a couple of cd's onto it via the media player.I put the tracks into a folder for each album but they are not divided on mp3.So i have to scan through all tracks to get into another album.So ,what have i not done or have done incorrectly.

I have managed to get tracks on to mp3 player but as wma files and not mp3.Is that why i can't put them into folders ?
I have downloaded the up to date version of windows media player which seems more geared up for ripping.
Do i have to download an encoder ?
