Right this might be a really stupid question but when it comes to this stuff I am really stupid.

I run a mac and my boy asked me if we could put MSN messenger on it cos the kids at school use it.
Can we?
I downloaded the thing from the website but it saysto choose an appication to open it on

Or will he have to wait untill he gets his ikkle laptop whn he goes to secondry school.

I could be talking out of my ar*e here, but I installed a copy of Susie Linux on a system here and it came with an applet called Gaim - its basically MSN Messenger for Linux I have to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if the MAC had a similar applet.


Got to ask though, why did you buy a MAC?

Have followed your link. Got him a hotmail account and registered but when it goes to log in it says we're not connected to the internet

I'll keep trying and sooner or later I'll stumble across it

I kept fiddling and I think I've sussed it. Seem to have all the right bits showing now and his hotmail account is working so he's off to school on monday to trade email addresses.

Trippy, my eldest Kasey, I sign her up an MSN Live account, tell her that she is allowed to have conversations with her friends but under no circumstances is she to download anything of any nature whatsoever at all.
Hour later I tell her Kasey that's long enough turn the machine off, she replies, hang on dad my friend is sending me a song.

Two days later I managed to get the pile of shite which included Trojans, Greeks, HIV, the POX and Bubonic plague and Measles off the drive, I actually had to spend money on a program and anyone who knows me and computers will tell you that's unheard of, so just watch what's going on when he's online

Trippy not sure what OS system you are on 9.2 or 10(X).

OS 10 has a thing called ichat, i think it is similar ot MSN.

Dont use that stuff meself so not 100% sure but check the apple website will tell ya.

I'm not experienced at all with Macs but others on the site swear by them because they are less likely to get bugs than a windows op system. Just make sure that he knows the difference between just browsing as opposed to downloading files, I thought that I had but obviously had not. Kasey's now got her own laptop and we're both much happier for that, I feel safer, she 'thinks' she's got more privacy but doesn't know I've installed ILP (In loco parentis) on it and any funny business will be shown up to me whenever I feel the need to look.
At the end of the Trippy just make sure you back up your files now the lad is using it.

Yes you can run MSN messenger on a mac.

What Mac do you have and what Operating System are you on?

I have used Macs for over 10 years and NEVER had any kind of virus or trojan get onto my system. Thats not to say I dont use protection though - there'll always be a first time

As far as I can tell (yes I am that much of a numpt at this stuff) its a G4 running OSX 10.4.8

I think I have everthing sussed for him now and the proof will be after school on monday when they get home and start chatting to each other.
