What's the answer to this dilema?

I have Mapsource v9NT for my Zumo on my Home PC

I have Mapsource City Select v6 on my laptop for my Quest

I also have a 2610 (with unopened/unlocked v7 City Navigator).

Q: Can I just register my 2610 on Garmin's site and use it from the Mapsource on my home PC (using my installation of v9NT?)

or is there a neater solution?

Al - I would give them a call down in Romsey, they are very helpful and will sort you out. I'm going to sort out my 2610 this week too as I have had it nearly a year:o

2610 won't run NT mapping I'm afraid. I'm assuming that your Quest is a regular Quest (Quest 1) rather than a Quest 2. The latter run NT mapping the former, like the 2610, only use non NT mapping.

If you have City Nav 7 with an unlock code then you can load that onto more than one PC and use it with your 2610. If you set-up a myGarmin account you might be able to share this with the Quest as well. Not sure if they still offer to provide a free 2nd unlock for another device.

Loading more than one Garmin mapping product onto a single PC results in a drop down menu appearing in Mapsource which allows you to select the mapping appropriate to the dive you're working with. You can change the mapping with a route active to share between different devices but you must do a recalc.

Bumpkin, Andy - thanks for that. I suddenly remembered that I used to have City Celect USA on my laptop and it behaved like you suggest.

Might just give Garmin a call and see what they suggest too, I don't really want to load more software onto the laptop - it's getting a bit chocka.

Cheers lads

Maybe this is what you were thinking of; If you can share City Nav 7 between your 2610 and the Quest, i.e. if Garmin will issue a 2nd unlock code. Then uninstall City Select 6 from the laptop and replace with City Nav 7 which is a generation more up to date than City Select 6.

Yeah, that would be a reasonable solution. I had thought previously that City Navigator would take up more memory on the Quest 1 than the City Select version, but it looks like it doesn't?

Well... the answer to that is yes and no at the same time

City Navigator (well at least v8 onward, I jumped from CS6 to CN8) has much bigger tile sizes than City Select. For a given country the total size is comparable. However, if you plot a route and select mapping around that then the difference is huge and significant. Have a look here for a more in depth explanation.

One way to get up to date mapping and have small tile sizes is to use Metroguide Europe in conjunction with MetroWizzz. There is a gotcha in so much as audio directions on roundabouts are as if for a normal junction, i.e. "turn left" instead of "take 1st exit". Otherwise it works the same as City Navigator. Pukka copies of Metroguide can be had off eBay (beware pirate copies though) or via bittorrent for the unscrupulous, it doesn't require an unlock code.
