Music
Hi Dave,
If you 'get info' on a typical song, it will tell you the sample rate and data rate. Normally these are 44hz and 128kbs. Reducing either or both of these can reduce file size, but at a cost to sound quality. You can reduce the 128kbs to 96kbs (or whatever you like) when importing into itunes. Go to 'Preferences' and the 'advanced' tab. this will allow you to change the kbs on import. Of course you will need to back up your originals before you import into an empty itunes. You could aslo play around with file formats : AAC / MP3 etc. and maybe squeeze out some extra compression, but if it were me I would prune down my collection for transfer to the iPod, I assume that you use playlists, which makes it easy to choose what you transfer to the iPod. If you want to put your whole collection on the iPod, then I think selling your existing iPod and investing in either the new one due in September (rumoured to be based on the iPhone) or of course when the new one comes out there will be plenty of yhe present 60 and 80gb versions appearing on eBay, my 60gb being one of them.
The trend is to increase the kbs to 256 and 360, so memory is king - rather than resampling to a lower quality. I am not an expert so if someone has another solution I would be interested to hear.
Regards,
Mike
