question for the fellow PC techies out there, on one of my servers I am running sockso music server, it works fine and can access it from outside my network, can play it, download tracks and create playlists.....there's about 54k tracks on it and it was fairly easy to set up and works a treat :clap

..... however its missing some things which I would like such as to control "my users" download bandwidth, the ability to remove the download function if i want, I want to see who is on line at the moment and what they are playing etc..

what other similar software is out there :nenau

Could you not use a Freenas server with CIFS shares for the music directories, or setup the Itunes/DAAP service if needed? That would allow you to restrict the users to specific shares (directories) and set user permissions (read, write, delete etc.). Don't know about bandwidth though, ask over at the Freenas forums. :thumb

Your users, so this is a commercial venture and your paying the fees?

Don't know about the software as such really as file share software like free nas will give you access restrictions but not the web player interface. I would probably look at doing something more in a firewall way. This will restrict bandwidth and possibly even block being able to download. Presumably with it being a flash player it hands the music out in FLA or shockwave format? You would be able to block mp3/wma or whatever from going through the firewall but still allow FLV through. If you portal it (users have to log into firewall) then you would know exactly who is doing what and when as well. If this is running on a windows machine and it uses IIS then you can restrict access via that and also monitor although not control bandwidth and usage through the logs. Same goes if its is Apache. Either way, commercial or not I would advise you get it secured ASAP before you get a knock on the door because if you dont know who is doing what with no restrictions your just a massive free file sharing site with no accounting.

think i've found some decent free software, :thumb2 am running it for the first time tonight.... its called Subsonic and you can control whether users (which are indivudally password protected) can play / download / create their own playlists etc.

you can also monitor the bandwidth, streaming rate, and adjust them accordingly (e.g. if a user appears to be downloading or using a lot of bandwidth a lot then i simply modify their account to play only... or delete them)

as for the term "users", :type the people I will share with are very close friends not the general public as I thought it would be a good idea to have a central store of music for parties etc rather than using different ipods and mp3 players, this way anyone with a decent internet connection and a laptop hooked up to an amp can use it as they see fit (with my permission and settings)

Subsonic can use built in encoders if required so appears to be all ok. It can also scan for relative podcasts. It works with most internet browsers and mobiles (such as WAP, iphone, android etc.)
