Hi all!

I've been writing stuff up again, this time what happened when I tried using a Rema / BMW-stylee repair kit on my rear tyre. Article/review is posted at: http://www.crypticide.com/dropsafe/articles/bikes/post20050803221555.html

Aside: It looks like the UKGSer user-interface has been overhauled? Well done, guys! I'm not sure I like it immediately, but I am sure it'll grow on me. Looks "cleaner", certainly, and with a different font...

I've had to use the kit a couple of time now with Tourances and on both occasions it worked OK for me... the second time it needed two plugs due to the size of the hole... but it worked as described on the packet.

Where was the hole.. in between the blocks or actually in the thick part of the block?

Alec,

Sorry to hear about your mishap... :( I've used the OEM BMW kit (which is remarkably similar - rebadged I guess) twice. Once on my Michelin Anarkee, and a week or so ago on my girlfriends GSX-R600.
One thing you don't mention is if you "lubed" the "cork-screw" with the "paste" (too many technical terms for mere laymens here..;) )
Yasee... on my girlfriends bike I started cleaning the hole without the "paste" on the "corkscrew" - luckily I did give the instructions a second glance, and just before I was about to "thread the needle", I realised that I need to "lube" both the hole (ooerrr) and the plug...

So far both repairs have worked a treat. In fact the plug in my Anarkee worked for about 4,000 miles...

So, even if you didn't like your kit... where did you get it from? (I seem to recall the BMW kit is £40 - which is cheap compared to a tyre, but I reckon it's got the usual BMW markup on it..?!?)

Cheers.. :)

Oh yeah, I followed the instructions to the letter, even read them out-loud before starting the fix - I am, alas, that sort of person :) - and everything got covered in a sensible film of blue goo but it still didn't work. I'm glad I had the European Assistance back-up. If other people have had success then I'm glad that someone has. I got the kit mail-order from MPS.

As for where the screw went in, there's a picture on the website - the hole was in the crease between the tyre "lozenges", at an angle, quite close to a corner. The head wore a groove into the side of a knobble.

Apparently in Norway it is illegal to ride on a repair, so a replacement was the only option. Frankly, I didn't mind that too much (I try to put my safety first) although the dent in my schedule, waiting for a replacement, prevented me getting to Nordkapp for the longest day.

If weather is cold, plugs seem to get brittle. Warmed up they should be ok.

Yeah, but this was in the land of 24hr sunlight where - snow on the roads aside - the tarmac would melt under the weight of my sidestand, and subside for a centimetre or so...

Most at ADVrider indicate that string plugs work best. They worked for me, and I now cary a custom kit that includes them. I have never tried the plugs that came with the OEM kit.

YMMV

Puncture repair kit

I cannot comment on the effectiveness of the repair kit but certainly about the price. I was also under the impression that BMW would charge about £40 for it (must have read it here) so followed advice and tried to get it from Hein Gericke where it is listed at just over £14.

What a surprise, HG did not have it in stock (Nottingham store) and did not know when they would get more. I kept on phoning them over a period of 3 months and still they did not have it. I was getting so fed up with this I decided to bite the bullet and went to Pidcocks. Yes, no problem, we have got the kit - £15! incl VAT. Why exactly have I been phoning HG??

I also did searches on the internet and nobody seems top sell the kit for less than £15 (some charge up to £22) and that does not include the postage charge.

I have learned my lesson, I will try BMW first before wasting time looking for alternative suppliers. You never know!
:)
