my pogo stick..(that'll be a sp370)

It runs

well, for short periods anyway, i'm guessing its running to lean cos the carb is setup for a 500 not a 370, It's a bitch to start but when it does it runs well until you touch the throttle, then it dies :nenau its got the right size jet but too much air. I'm going to look into that tomorrow.

Just minor stuff now, like the chain and guard to fit.

Should be good for an mot later in the week :bounce1

How fecking happy am i :JB

fantastic news...good luck with the carburation issues

:thumb2

she's looking great

Great bike i had one and tried real hard to kill it but it stood all the punish i could give it and more.
Looking good keep at it, wish i had mine back :thumb

My instument cluster is offet from the bike's centreline - is this normal or the result of a dropsie?

:D

Got another carb off ebay, with all the correct jets and everything. Put it on and it idles ok, soon as you touch the throttle it dies. I've taken the carb off and drenched it in carb cleaner, might put it back on tomorrow if i get chance. If that doesn't work i'm guessing its a timing issue.

Looks like that'll be something else i'll learn how to do then :thumb2

I had the later road going version GN400, a right bastard to start when freezing cold. 6volt electrics don't help, weedy lights.

av u checked the rear drum,?they get rust under the lining, the lining cracks up an puts you on your ass, mine did it, kno of 2 others too,,,,worth a check:thumb2,,,happened after long lay ups when the rust got chance to get hold

had the wheels apart and bead blasted / powdercoated. no rust or cracks on them. Not done anything else to the bike, having a bit of a fueling / timing issue last time, serviceing the dakar got in the way. I'm pretty sure timing is just about there but i need to change the jet size, its too big at the moment. Its just a matter of having time. I'm in russia all next week so other stuff is being put infront of rebuilding the bike

well, one step forwards and two back :blast

Figured out that the timing was off by one tooth, causing the bike to run rough / not run at all. So i take off the valve cover to alter the timing, managing to snap one bolt in the process :blast

this is what i found

three snapped bolts in the head :blast Two were old injurys.

cam followers fecked :blast

and the cam itself is fecked :blast

looks like its been starved of oil at some point so that's the end of that then.

Good job i have a set of spares in perfect condition :D

The saga continues, hopefully i'll get it back together tomorrow night, damn work and life getting in the way again  :D

you fecking beauty, it works :clap

replaced the fubard head with the new one, reset the cam timing, valve clearances and the igintion gap and off it went.

dad took it out for a quick spin (mad old bugger, grinning like a cheshire cat) and got it into third so the gearbox seems fine.

just got to finish the damn thing now, everything needs torquing up and some bits still need fitting.

I'm now off for a meal at a posh restaurant, much rather finish the bike tbh :blast

time for an update

well it passed the mot first time:clap pissed oil all over my legs and boots on the way there due to a old o ring on the head, it vibrated the indicator relay connections loose and it only did 30mph. Changed the jet from a 160 to a 107 and it did 40, finally changed it to the correct 125 jet and it ran a treat, if a little noisily. Finally got the static timing spot on and it rewarded me with two swift kick backs into the shin  They hurt, lots. Runs great tho, cured the engine noise by checking the valve clearances, exhaust was way loose :blast

It vibrates like a good un, so far its undone a torqued up engine mount bolt which has been replaced with a loctited torqued up nyloc bolt. (i'd like to see it shift that) Then it decided that the rev counter cable in the head wasn't needed so it undid that (more locktight and a pair of mole grips) Most recently it decided that the exhaust didn't really need to be connected to the engine so it undid the header bolts (also torqued up) I've put studs into the head (more locktight) and used serrated flange nuts on the header flange, also locktighted and torqued up, just to be on the safe side i stuck another nut on the studs and did the same to those to.

I've a feeling i'll be spending most of the time tightening stuff up. And buying ample supplies of locktight. Its worth it tho. :D

The mate i bought it off as a frame had a ride on it at the weekend, see the sig for his reaction, pure class :D

Great job - looks absolutely awesome! :clap:clap

thanks mav. Took it too work today, got it started first kick both times without looking through the window for the bolt that tells you where to kick from, So i am learning :clap

Got home tonight to find the top engine mount bolt loose again :blast Fecking thing. Even more locktight and double nutting for that then

Long time no update

time for an update then :D
ran the bike for a couple of days to and from work, wouldn't go over 50, tried everything including re setting the timing, bigger jet the lot. Nothing worked. Then it started burning oil :blast Did a compression test on the cylinder, result was around 60psi, absolute minimum rebuild pressure is 100psi :blast Took the cam cover off to find the 'new' cam and followers worn, seems the hardening has gone :blast

Took the head off, fearing that the rings were fubare'd, not so :bounce1 the exhaust valve oil seal has gone (oil on top of the cylinder was the giveaway there) and the bore is in great condition. Reason for the crappy compression is a bad head gasket (oil had seeped outwards on top and under the gasket)

So i'm left with an engine i can't rebuild and looking on the web the only place i can find that has the parts wants £220 for the cam and followers  Money i don't have spare. Looking on ebay today i find a cam and a complete cam cover with followers for £40 from the usa, couldn't press the buy it now button fast enough :D

Next step is to buy a spring compressor and change the valve oil seals, may as well re seat the valves while I'm waiting for the parts to arrive from the us.

Its turning into a bit of a saga this :D

well, the bits have arrived from the states, and look brand spanking new :clap A complete gasket set has arrived as well, the valves have been re ground to get a good seat and the oil seals have been replaced.

all i need is some moly paste and i can put it all back together. Hopefully finish it by Tuesday night :D

If your after engine parts, i seem to remember "Bumpmuncher" (real name mark) off this forum has a later dr400, and second engine for it...

both were last seem languishing at the back of his garage. IIRC they both share the same engine....
