Problem: My sweetheart moans about the grab rail being behind her and her fingers ache. Plus I need room for the tent and sleeping bags when said sweetheart is accompanying me.
Solo camping is easy I take the pillion seat off and the tent and wank pit strap in its place.
Solution: Extend the rear rack to accommodate the tent and a pair of love sacks. But I’m not prepared to pay Touralich the price of a night on the beer and a sit down curry for a bit of plate aluminium.
How I did it: I purchased a piece of aluminium chequer plate cut to 10” x 20” for two pints of Stella (friend in the pub). To this I added a second BMW grab rail for the price of a couple of southern shandy’s to Bmbob. The final part of the puzzle needed a piece of ali plate my Dad had been using as a cooker black splash in his camper van (dodgy brakes and rusting bodywork have left this project rotting at the side of Dads garage, Mum wants it gone and soon)
I put a piece of rubber mat between the plate and the rack to protect the rack from being scratched. The Ali sheet from the camper van was cut to fit under the rack to spread the load.
I found some “U” bolts that had been hanging around for a while to finish the job off.
The grab rails work better reversed. Sweethearts hands and luggage straps will both be accommodated.
All I need now are some stainless Allen bolts to replace the hex heads I’ve used tonight (friend in the pub looks like he’s getting another Stella) and a coat of lacquer to stop it tarnishing.
It wont be a permanent fixture on the bike. But it will be easy to fit when it’s needed for two up camping trips (bring on the Hogroast)
Total cost 3 pints of Stella and a couple of beers for Bmbob and a few hours in the garage. The plus points are knowing I’ve got exactly what I wanted, and the satisfaction of making it myself. Up yours Wondertech.
Cheers,
Kev
