Hiya, since becoming a tosser over a year or so ago I’ve read so many ride reports that I thought it was about time I had a bash myself……….so, in the hope that its not too boring, here goes.ffice

Via Lindisfarne & Bamburgh in Northumberland. Arriving in Rannoch at 4ish just as it was getting dark I was a bit dismayed to realise that alot of B&B shut for the winter & I ended up having to back track to Pitlochry to find somewhere to kip!<o

Didn’t fancy even more exposure to the gales so went back down the A99 instead of going round the top. Then the short days stymied me & I ended up crossing to Ullapool on the west coast in pitch dark, so, although I’m sure I was surrounded by some amazing scenery I couldn’t see jack sh*t!<o

Route: North out of Pitlochry on the A9 & A99, brilliant roads especially with 0 traffic or boys in blue. West from Golspie to Ullapool on A949 / A836 / A837 / A835. A lot of this is single lane with passing places.<o

1st half of the day was brilliant, some amazing bits of the Lake District, including Honister Pass, Grasmere, Ambleside, Windermere, then down to Grange Over Sands – cos I’m told I used to visit there from nearby Barrow where I lived as a nipper! Some impressive views across Morecambe bay from “Humphrey Head” – and also some pretty slippery mud where I came sooo close to dropping it! After this section though it got quite depressing to be surrounded by too many people & too much traffic all the way to Prestatyn!<o

Once I’d escaped from the seemingly constant “Mobile Speed Camera” warning on the Zumo I of course had to take in the A483 down to Leominster – before heading east along the length of the lovely A44 & back to busy Surrey! <o

All in all, 2210 miles, lots of rain, plenty of wind & temperature varied from 5 to 12C. I stayed dry & pretty toasty throughout – North Face base layer, Streetguard 2 trousers, Rallye 2 jacket with w’proof overjacket & the BM phase change jacket under it. Oh & BM summer gorerex gloves cos I find anything too bulky & you can’t feel the heat! <o

Would I do it again at this time of year – absolutely! Only thing I’d do different is take a waterproof bag for the camera – lost loads shots cos of water on the lens L & maybe try & prebook B&Bs to save grief at the end of a long day – but then of course that means having to have a cunning plan……………which I’m not good at J<o
