Having read many reports and reviews on here, I just had a 2.5 hour test ride on the new water cooled GS. I'm going to qualify this by saying now that I've never ridden a GS before. I currently own an RT, and my I my only previous "adventure bike" experience has been owning a Suzuki DL1000 V-Strom and riding a Varadero 1000.

My first thought was wow, that bike looks great and sounds even better when started up - standard exhaust is good (I can only imagine how good the Akra sounds).

I got on it expecting more leg room than my RT, and was disappointed - having read stuff on here I expected more. Then I had my first experience of what ruined my test ride - the bloody gear lever!! Downshifting not a problem, but wtf is that peg on the side stand doing there!?! I'll confess to having size 12 feet and wearing TCX Infinity boots which are chunkier than most, but I had to wedge my toes between the side stand peg and the gear lever to change up. Never have I found neutral so many times by accident on any bike. First thing I would do is reposition this gear lever higher.

But that was the only negative! The engine is a big improvement - can still chug around at low revs, but by Christ it shifts! In Dynamic mode with Hard suspension it reminded me of a KTM Duke I once rode many, many years ago. It's like a supermoto!! Amazing, and a real improvement.

The seat is good (not as comfy as the RT)' and the high riding position is great. The screen could be bigger. It was a dry day but with gusty winds - I noticed I felt a lot more wind than on the RT, but I expected that. I'd read about the cross wind instability thing, and from my experience there's no problem. I think being say in the airflow accounts for it - I certainly noticed it blowing me when on a high, exposed section.

It was on very similar tyres to my RT, being Metzelers (looked to have the same pattern as my Z8 Interacts - but I'll confess to not having looked too closely) and there were no issues with grip. The computer said the tyre pressures were higher than my RT's, at 2.5 and 3.0 bar front and rear. By heck the GS turns in quick!! Didn't feel as planted and stable as my RT, but I guess the higher CoG accounts for that.

So in summary MY OPINION is that this is a cracking bike, and I would definitely be faster everywhere than I currently am - its so easy to ride quick but safely. It's really an impressive bike and once the GSA comes with the new engine I'll try that with a view to buying one. If I could afford two bikes this would definitely be my 2nd to my RT.

Its such a stupid thing to soil a good bike but hey I said about it when it was at the NEC, looking forward to seeing how a pillion gets on with the riding position.

Maybe I have weird feet? just normal size 9 Hein Gerike Ralleye boots and the foot stand peg thing has never got in the way - maybe I am deformed or the rest of your are :D

My girlfriend has been on a 200mile round trip as pillion - her comments are: seems noisier on the back than my twin-cam and her arse was starting to ache after 100 miles - her first impressions are that it is a little less comfortable than the twin-cam. She is 5'2" size 8.

Oh swmbo wasn't impressed when saw/sat on the WC at the NEC was kinda hoping it would be better than the old 1200's really don't want to fork out another £500 for decent seats.

In regards to foot pegs what may suit you may not suit some one else, personally I prefer my fastaways great for long distance but will wait to see if the new layout annoys or is OK, but I am lucky only size 7's

It's not an issue for me, but I have the BMW height adjustable pegs:rob

+1 ... Not a problem here either size 10's and I don't catch the stand. Can feel the centre stand on my heel though but no problem, kind of nice to rest it!

Funny as I never found the gear lever a problem and that was wearing MX boots - mind you I change up using the edge/welt of the boot and ride on the balls of my feet most if the time, if that makes a difference?

The centre stand though drove me nuts and I actually got my heel caught in it at one stage - guess you'd get used to it after time though.

size 11 daytonas and i didn't really have a problem. a little more fiddly than the old bike perhaps, but quite acceptable.

when on the balls of my feet, i could occasionally feel the centre stand under my left heel, but that is true of my TC too.

Yep , I had no problem either, although like Andres, I like to ride on the balls of my feet and found my heel catching the centre stand. No real hardship though ..

Yeah, perhaps it's my style - when I'm in the road I like to sit on the bike and hook my boot under the lever (so it is in the reinforced section over my toes) to change up. Only on the balls of my feet when on it (and not changing) or when off road a short ways. That said, don't go off road on the RT apart from the odd car park!

Having slept on it, I really think the new GS is a remarkable bike - it will be between the water cooled RT and GSA when released for me.

Just like the OP I come from an RT (and short affair with a 1200 GSA ). I found the WC GS ( Low version and standard seat) as good as the RT as far wind protection goes , with a bit of chill on top of my leg. But then I am only 5'9''.
I had the bike for 3 hours and done just over 120 miles.
Top of my list is ergonomics and the new GS is almost there. No pains from the seat,no buffeting,no wind noise ( System 6+ear plugs).
Issues, the dash is a mess .
You can hardly see ( I have perfect vision) the numbers in the speedometer ,the digital display for speed is about 5 mm high , yet a gear indicator is 20/25 mm high. In our GATSO invested land is not to clever. In strong sun the digital display is useless anyway.
Every time I used the indicator, I managed to knock the small wheel thing and the GPS display would change , but then do I have small hands. The horn I see was replaced by a loud end can....
For the first time in years I had some good fun on a bike, personally I struggle to justify the need for an RT especially that a larger screen will be available in the future ( according to the dealer ) and I am sure those plastic covers on either side of the screen will be made by somebody in a bigger size.
I would have a standard bike with heated grips and cruise control. At the moment the best deal I had on a new bike was £50 off a top box:blast and I have no part ex,so maybe I wait until the rush is over.

Just done 600 miles with SWIMBO plus 3 x Vario's full:D

Me:TE low seat version. Much more comfy and bum didn't start to ache until 250 miles or so. Screen is a vast improvement over the twin cam. Don't have any problem with the side stand thingy. I bought the adjustable brake pedal so the rear brake is perfect height. Gearbox and clutch loosening up nicely. Easy to lift front and dynamic should be relabelled fucking manic. You have to be very careful 2 up or the front wheel is in the air before you know it. i'll stick to "road" 2 up. Brakes are superb. Much more comfy and solid feel than my Twin cam. I sometimes hit the nav wheel thingy when indicating right but getting more used to it.
Her: I fitted the lowered rear peg kit from my Twin Cam, bolts straight on, easier to get on and more comfy than the TC. Less buffeting. Numb bum sets in much later. Top box is bigger and will take a full face helmet, or in her case more girly clothes.

Overall, for touring, much better than the TC but obviously not in RT territory. ( I went from an RT to my old GS).

Only done 100 miles solo at the beginning so can't judge yet.

Was it worth the upgrade you bet it is a fantastic bike:aidan
