Could the collective wisdom of this site explain to a complete numpty what to expect an R100R Mystic to have in addition to a standard R100R please ie What is the significance of the label Mystic?

If we told you that it would no longer be a mystic.

Subframe - lower seat height, Seat unit, side panels and better styling than the R100R which was more of a road version of the GS.

Is that it?!! I thought it might have bigger foo foo valves or something like that.:D

Cheers Rob, now the myticery has been revealed.:thumb

Both versions seem pointless. There are some things the Germans do well and.........

The positives of the Mystic are IMO:
-finally an airhead with reasonable braking :beerjug:
-handling not bad
-good looking bike with clean lines (I like the wire wheels too)
-comfortable
-low seat height
-cheaper than other airheads ATM (in Oz)

It wouldn't take much to improve it:
-set of Moorespeed high comp pistons :thumb2
-less restrictive muffler
-remove of clean air system and (if keen) replace heads with non clean air versions (why? the clean inlet intrudes into the exhaust port and must have some effect on gas flow. Whether this makes heaps of difference on an airhead I dunno but if doing other mods it makes sense to me)
- suspension tweaking

Why are they so unpopular? I mostly quite like my R80R, it handles better than my RS, the brakes are better than my RS (even with the single front disk) the RS is a fair bit faster but not really an exciting bike to ride unless you consider bad brakes and suspension exciting, what can you expect from an airhead? They are old mans bikes arent they?

I dont like the position of the bars, have tried to fit RS bars but couldnt get the controls on and the steering seems a bit ponderous, not sure if its due to different fork rake or the high bars that I just cant get used to.

Mine came with an aftermarket exhaust, stainless headers, no crossover, infamous Y piece and a noisy can, Remus I think, but it seems to pull ok and has some torque from 3k onwards.

Whats this clean air business?

Im not out to defend The R80R against the odds, just would like to know what Im missing as I dont have much recent bike experience apart from these two airheads.

No plans to get rid of mine, cant imagine why a GS with or without a slash would be any better if you do mostly road miles?

Why are they so unpopular?

Part of the reason maybe that being the last of the airheads they are perceived as a "parts bin special" released to use up whatever was left in the factory. The retro looks being a marketing ploy to grab the "I remember when" buyers. Not a great appeal to the "purists". Technically they are superior to their predecessors in areas like braking and suspension but IMO they missed the boat by not warming the engine a bit and using that as a marketing point of difference.

I bought mine as an every day road bike, it was competent but I couldn't get excited by it so I went back to my GSPD. Had I done the engine mods to the Mystic that I did to the GSPD it might have been a different story.

They will become sought after in time IMO.

CLEAN AIR
This explains it better than I can. I think I still have pics of the exhaust port interference and will post them if I can find them.

Yeah, I get the parts bin special thing, they could have spent a little more time on the design. Cant understand why they would be any less engaging to ride than any other stock airhead though and they make a great base to improve on, aesthetically if nothing else.

Ok, thanks for the link, we didnt get lumbered with the clean air thing over here :)

Funny thing about why they are less engaging to ride, I thought it was just me but keep hearing the same thing. As for a base to improve on I've mentioned before that I reckon they are a good candidate for a cafe racer. :thumb

The clean air bullshit must have been for the US market and we copped it too. A fairly clunky way of meeting emmissions regs IMO.
