Hi all,

Have a lovely new tourance back tyre & have a nail in it now - any ideas if I can put a permanent reliable fix in this - local garage will not touch it for legal reasons.

gutted from ealing

I've got a stop-n-go plugger with me down here in Chiswick, I'd be happy to pop over with it. I got a self-tapper removed and repaired by a local garage that does bike tires, was it a car shop you enquired at?

as long as it's in the treaded area it should be perfectly fixable for a few quid.

these hopeless cnuts that can't do anything for "legal reasons" get right up my nose :spitfire

Aren't Tourance all V rated now instead of H? I seem to recall there is an issue with repairing most V rated tyres (Michelin Pilot Roads being an exception though that's not much use for a GS rider!).

I had two repairs in the rear Tourance on my last bike - Aprilia Caponord, both small nails through the block areas. Had no problems whatsoever with the repairs. I think it's the manufacturers who would rather that repairs aren't carried out, makes you buy a new one.

Had my BT020 repaired in Italy 2600 miles ago, the tyres got about 1000 mile of tread left in it which I intend using :)

The Pilot Roads are a very acceptable tyre choice for the GS rider who doesn't want unrepairable 020s.

Apart from the BS regarding repairing the tyre, there is the issue of where the nail entered and at what angle. Oblique penetrations seem to scare repairers because their little plug won't sit square on to the inside of the carcase.

Hi,

Just had exactly the same thing in my 500 mile Tourance. I have Ultra-sh*t in and expected to pull out the nail see a little pink blob pop out and all be well !! ( just like on the BMF stand demo) No chance , air p*ssed out and I suffered serious ammounts of flattage.

I shoved a can of temp tyre weld stuff IN and went home . I then repaired the tyre with the B*W tyre plug thingies a week later, which is scary , jamming a 4" spike into the carcass etc.

I have done a few hundred miles since including a quick thrash from Bolton to the BMF and back and all is well although the valve got a bit sticky which led to a very slow leak when the cap was off ( due to paranoia )

I am fairly happy & confident in the plug repairs even though I was turned away at a couple of tyre fitters.

My nail was bang in the cente of the tyre so you have to make your own choice.

Good luck,

In retrospect I should have pulled the nail and gunned it for a couple of miles for the Ultra-s*it to do its centrefugal thing but the garage was on a dual carriage way so I didn't want to risk running flat to the rim.

Having had three recent Ultra-s*it experiences it appears that the product sometimes has to be "encouraged" - rotating the punture site to the bottom and smacking the sidewall with a rubber mallet, or whatever is to hand, seems to do the trick

Hi,
I was turned away at a couple of tyre fitters.

is that because of the nature of the puncture or because the tyre was filled with sticky shite?

1 place was ATS who "did cars but not bikes sir". The other was a local private tyre fitter.

I didn't tell either that I had Ultra-sh*te in. Neither even looked at the bike.

When I first pulled the nail out and the air started hissing out I was at the air pump with the bike on the centre stand. I tried spinning the tyre by hand but it didn't help much.

I thought about getting on the bike and firing it up whilst on the centre stand and giving it some but had visions of disapearing through the through the side of the car wash booth if the wheel touched down :-)

I also thought about barracking the display rep at the BMF but hey , life's to short.

The plug is holding ok but then I also have ultra sh*te and a can of tyre-weld in!!

Ho-Hum

I repaired mine with the B*W repair kit on my bike.

I have since covered 1000 miles, a trip to the garage for a service who said it looked fine and to top it all a 30 mile plus trot down The Ridgeway off road (thanks Clive) :D

And it seems okay still.

ta for all the help - and offers to fix.

Went to car garage in the end, in Chiswick - power lane - and the very helpful guy patched it for no charge, top geezer! He spent a good 15 mins doing a proper job.
