NAS devices and backups

Yes if it's just or backup it will work fine for you. Cobian is pretty good too although it does come with its own software but I have never used that. If you went up a range you would be able to create your own personal cloud storage (Dropbox type thing) but that may be of no interest to you.
 
I did use Mosy (sp?) for a while, but it took soooo long to sync (weeks), that I can't face going back to it.
 
Not sure how much disk space you use on your pc's but I'm backing up my films and photos and 2 laptops and I'm now running short of space on a 2TB drive.

Considering most pc's now come with disk drives of 500GB it's worth thinking what your rate of use of storage increase is likely to be over the next few years, on all machines and then double that for your backups. Could be 2TB is fine for your usage. I've previously made the mistake of buying too small a HD and having to buy again 18 months later.
 
Maybe consider a NAS diskless device which would allow you to add your own disks and upgrade to larger disks when required. The also allow the use of RAID arrays to improve read/write speeds and fault tolerance. I use a QNAP TS-421 with 4 1GB drives. Installed as 3 disk RAID 5 array with a hot spare.
 
Household NASs are pretty slow, so the initial copy of data will take a looooooong time.
I did 2TB overnight.

However, subsequent copying will be much faster as you only need to copy files that have changed.

I use the free version of SyncBack, which has a number of options on how you synchronise the original and backup.

I use an HP Homeserver, that backs up to a 2Tb NAS.

Also, when you do do a backup, make sure you maintain one off site.
After all, if they are both in the house, and the house burns down you still lose everything :(
 
We use a seagate black armour and its pretty good !

full back ups can take a long long time tho !
 
It's always interesting to see how things grow legs. This has went from a cheap 100 quid NAS to a 300 quid plus with disks NAS lol. Just go buy a drobo 8000fs and be done with it ;-)

there was this little datacentre on Ebay for a few £m, that would do the trick nicely.
