From Dec 2024 Nationwide is upping the monthly cost of its Flexplus account to £18 a month. £5 extra.

You can get very similar cover via https://monzo.com/current-account/max for £17 a month plus the other useful travel benefits of Monzo.
The breakdown cover is from RAC, covers Europe and has no age limit
Travel cover from Zurich. Cover motorcycles but beware, no cover for pre-existing medical stuff and unlike Nationwide, no upgrade path

Monzo do a fee free account if you want a useful account for travelling with no currency commission.

An increase is not unexpected - tho' an extra £5 pcm is a hefty percentage extra.
But I won't be switching away just yet as Flexplus still works for me whereas the Monzo account package doesn't. All down to personal circumstances. e.g. As long term members, Nationwiide currently give both me and my partner back more than the increase will cost.
YMMV as the 'muricans say.

The nationwide flex plus cost increases from this month.
It is a big rise, but it is still the cheapest packaged account and probably one of the best if it works for you.
European breakdown cover for you ( and your other half if you have a joint account) for any vehicle ( there are size exemptions) , and good money exchange rates, phone cover, travel insurance, and it probably is still good value.

We've received £200 pa from them so good value. Does Mondo cover motorhomes in europe ?

Nationwide's new underwriters for the travel insurance no longer charge extra for being 70 and over, they also charged us less for existing medical conditions. Adding SWMBO to my flexplus account also means we both get the roadside and rescue cover- does Mondo do the same?

just got a quote for the medical stuff - £60 which is a lot less than the previous insurer. Still more than I pay Allclear for an annual Gold travel policy.
Total cost now is 18x12 plus £60 = £276. Not good value for me, as I have breakdown cover in Europe and personal cover in the UK for £60 from LV. Leaves me £156 in pocket as the rest of the cover is of little value to me as a singleton. Would be very different if I had a partner or dependent kids.

I still went for it, as you say Wessie, it pays in some circumstances and now both Coop and Nationwide are £18 a month.

I had a claim after a wee ailment in Egypt
Nationwide were fantastic
Spoke with a real person, funds in my bank within 3 days
I'll be sticking with Nationwide....👍

My wife had a knee injury on day 3 of a 10 day skiing trip very recently. I was prepared for a battle with Nationwide’s insurers Aviva, but they brought her home within 3 days following a very easy process, dealt with the financial side in a 20 min phone call, with the money in my bank within 24 hours.
The recent change from Nationwide’s old insurers meant there was no age ‘upgrade’ for being over 70, and my medical history upgrade charges were cheaper than in the past.
We will continue to use the Flexplus (y)

Same here regarding tha age suppliment. Luckily I haven't had a need to claim but if I did I can't see there being a problem as Nationwide have a good reputation to maintain, so can't see them risking it by using some dodgy underwriter.

Thread revival to ask has anyone actually used the European breakdown service offered by Nationwide on this account?

I’m thinking of opening a Flexplus account for the insurances as I think it makes financial sense for us but am a bit perturbed by the statement in the T&Cs about Euro recovery that they don’t have a “specialist motorcycle recovery service”. It does go on to say your m/c will be recovered or transported to your destination by Whatever means they have available. Hopefully this via a pro service who know how to and not to tie down a bike.

Any views?

Good call!

You do not want a recovery by an inexperienced types. You know the likes of as @Tbolt has experienced quite recently.

I have it but not used it and hopefully won't have to. If I did I would be watching them like a hawk to make sure it was done correctly as I do when I have bike collected for service whether pros or not.

I haven't used the Recovery service but I have been a member of the scheme for a number of years particularly for the annual multi trip travel insurance. I have to pay an additional age and pre-existing condition premium which last year was £137. I had quite a serious illness earlier this year and the premium for me and my wife has risen to £216. Bugger that I thought, I'll look else where. Cheapest quote I had on the same conditions was over £700!
I think I'll stay with it.
