Hi all, my early Nav 6 was replaced by garmin last October due to ghosting and they sent me one of the latest cap touch versions.

I didn't get chance to use it a great deal last year but this season i've had at least 2 occasions where the unit randomly shuts down and restarts itself whilst in the mount and riding a route, i seem to recall it did it last year, once, but thought it was just a one off. Also when it restarted the last time i was out the bike didn't recognise the sat nav was in the holder so the wonder wheel was out of action.

The contacts don't look dirty and neither does the screen but i checked out the garmin trouble shooter and i've just completed the following today i.e.

- latest software update
- Reformatted the micro sd card
- Cleaned the pins etc with electrical contact cleaner
- Given the screen a thorough clean

I'll have to see if there's any improvement from the above and see how it goes but i'm wondering if anyone else has experienced the same issue and is there a fix of some sort that i've missed ?

Cheers

As the device is little used, I’d guess at:

Dirty / stuck contacts

A battery that is on its way out or not decently charged before use

A duff electrical supply to the GPS mount

Device not seated properly in the mount

I've seen this lately as well. The unit just re-boots itself.
I've seen this with Garmin units going back to the beginning, especially on the road off the motorway heading to the Hoek of Holland ferry where it always does it in the same place.

Yesterday however, it attained new heights of annoyance. I noticed it had gone into reboot so I waited for it to come back on so I could have the route in front of me. Luckily, I knew roughly where I was leading my group so it wasn't a major issue...... until the [Agreed] button came up, at which point it re-booted again, and again, and again,................... I think it did it about twenty times. Then, without input from me, it started up properly and remained reliable for the rest of the day. It was even still navigating the route.

I've checked to see if there is any firmware fix for this (I'm on V10.40) but nothing is being offered.

I think I'll boot up and clear my user data in case it's a memory issue or something like that. It could do with a clear out anyway.

Edit: it says it has 7GB out of 15GB still available so

A quick Google suggests that deleting user data by doing a Hard Reset (via the menu) is the fix for this solution and also that it seems to be a problem common to navigators for both 2 and 4 wheeled BMWs

Thanks for those that gave feedback. I only used the unit for a few times after the card reformat etc as I ended up moving across to the new connected ride navigator. It didn't play up after the sequence but I didn't use it enough to form any firm conclusions. I'm keeping the nav 6 as a spare back up.
It's been a long process, for me anyway, getting to grips with the new BM version but after plenty of mistakes, frustrations and testing, I've just about cracked it in terms of getting it to work how I tend to use it.
I've not had any random turn offs like the nav 6 which seems to suggest the problem derived from the unit rather than the holder.
