G'Day Guys
I have just enquired about a Navigator 11 plus from my local BM dealer in Oz to fit my 04 1150GS Adventure. The girl in spares quoted me $2395:00 Australian Dollars + another $98:00 for the mount + 38:00 for the wiring thingy (double f.....ck).
Now after picking myself off the floor after my coronary occlusion, I jumped on the net only to discover that I can buy from the states a full setup ready to go for $1195:00 American bucks. Now taking into consideration the exchage rate + postage, I will still be about $900:00 dollars better off, less the money to buy the Aussie City Navigator version 6.
My main qustion to those more knowlegable in such matters than myself is, is the City Navigator version 6 going to work straight away in the Navigator 11 plus, even considering that it will have the American base map in it, and does any of you think this might be the way to go?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Willie, honest to goodness, I think you would be best off just buying the Garmin equivalent to the BMW Navigator, in Australian format - that way you will get the correct basemap and the correct detailed cartography. It will likely cost less than the BMW product.

I honestly don't recommend you order a 'wrong continent' version - there's just too much grief if you go down that path. I go back and forth from Europe to North America very frequently - for that reason, I have one GPSR for each continent. If I get stuck with the wrong one due to logistics or packing errors, it is a PITA to have to use the wrong one - it doesn't function as well as the one with the basemap for the region I am actually in.

Thank you Michael for such a quick reply.
Are you suggesting I bite the bullet and pay the money asked by my BM store, or are you suggesting I buy just the 2610 with the Pacific/Australian base map by itself, as I rather fancy the look and functionality of the extra button Navigator. Or is it possible to buy the Navigator cradle seperately and slot a standard 2610 in it?
Your help is certainly appreciated.

In short IMHO he's saying.

Yes 2610 with Aus base map.

No 2610 won't be able to use the cradle functions.

BTW I've done almost what you're suggesting ie a US base map 2610 used in the EU. As long as you have the correct City Nav Mapsource and load World Map there won't be much difference. However in my case if I went outside the coverage of the EU base map (if it had been fitted) then the problems would start.

Willie:

It kind of boils down to this:

You have three 'current generation' products to choose from in the 2xxx product family - the 26xx, 27xx, and now the new 28xx. I wrote a brief comparison of those three here on the forum within the last 7 days, have a look around and that will tell you the major differences between them. It is quite possible that some of the newer features that have been introduced (traffic information via FM, alerts of speed cameras) may not be of much value to you in Oz - this I don't know.

I have used both the BMW Navigator cradle and the normal Garmin remote stuck on the handlebar with Velcro. Both provide the same functionality, in my opinion. So, it's really a matter of what you prefer.

Once you have figured out what GPSR you need, and what remote control system you want, that should lead you to the decision about what to buy. The most important thing, though, is that you buy a GPSR with the Australian basemap in it. You will not be happy with the results if you buy an American or European spec GPSR.

Buy the Garmin StreetPilot 2610 in Australia - AU$1389
(comes with car mounts/cables and City Navigator Australia mapping)
Buy the Garmin motorcycle cradle and wiring - AU$87
Buy the BMW mount - AU$98

The BMW cradle buttons will not work with the SP2610

City Navigator Australia mapping is AU$349 to buy on its own

If you buy the SP2610 in Australia then it comes with the unlock code on a yellow piece of paper and you do not have to unlock it on Garmins website.
What this means is that when the next version of the mapping (City Nav Aus v7 - due July/August) is released Garmin will not know when you purchased your unit and so will give you v7 upgrade for free (normally US$125 approx AU$175)

SP2610 are currently back ordered and due in in 10 days.

PS Tried to insert some links but it does not seem to be working

PPS I work for GPSOZ
