Just looking a little info.

Seen a few of these on ebay in the past for less than a ransom. What are they like? pros & cons. I wont be a seasoned traveller, occasional weekend trips (UK only), other than that I'm a day tripper with virtually no need for it.

Essentially the same as a Garmin 2610 but with extra buttons built into the cradle.

It uses the earlier mapping product from Garmin that was discontinued in 2009 so you won't be able to get up to date mapping for it. You'll be stuck with the mapping it comes with and if that's much earlier than 2009 then the number of routing anomalies might be an issue.

Plenty of people swear by these, the later Garmins being dumbed down to a certain extent.

Very devoid of some of the bells and whistles some expect from a sat nav these days, for example full post code searching.

If you're on a limited budget consider a Garmin 2720, the next model on from the 2610/Nav2. This runs the later and still available mapping that current Garmins employ and will do full postcodes. Still devoid of frills such as MP3 player etc. but very capable and rugged GPS.

If what your looking at doesn't include current mapping and a mount you'll have to budget for these as well. Ensure that the seller will be including all paper-work such as the unlock codes and is willing to de-register the unit with Garmin otherwise mapping updates won't be possible.

I know feck all about sat navs, all I do know is i dont want to spend a fortune as I know I would not use it to its potential. Tom Tom's are getting decent reviews also?

Get one, great GPS..................all roads you like will be on it, they haven't moved hills and mountains

For £100, it's a cheap unit and you'll never lose money

Only thing it won't have is mapping of new bypasses and motorways, but who needs them..................use your eyes and follows the signs - then it will re-route back on track automatically

Had a Zumo 550 and much prefer the 2610/Nav 2 (I have both, one on each bike)

Get one, great GPS

It depends on how he's going to use it really. If he's going to do lots of route plotting in Mapsource with ride-out routes and not worry about the odd change of road then it would be a bargain.

However, if he needs it more for guidance to a destination then the postcode search is very handy but missing on that model. Sure you can do it by street name and number but for a bit more a 2720 is a better bet.

TomTom Rider is also an option though I would pay a little more for the MkII version with the beefed up cradle, the MkI cradle had issues in lots of cases. The Rider has a GUI that's a little more intuitive but it lacks the route plotting capability of the Garmins though this can be achieved, though not quite as well, by using either TYRE or ITN Converter.
