Navigator II memory upgrade................

I wonder if anyone can help ???

My standard device has a 512 MB unit in it. However i want to upgrade to at least a Gig. Bought a Kingston 1GB CF card, and it did not work.

Question:
Has anyone upgraded their device. If so, which MAKE of card did you manage to get working ?

I have read other forums etc etc and views seem to conflict. So if you have done it, then please reply. i.e. If you have first hand experience.

The 1GB card works as it should with card readers and xp operating system. It's just the Garmin devices that it seems to struggle with.

I sadly also have a garmin 2610 which is essentially a BMW Navigator II with a slightly different firmware set. The normal Garmin 2610 Ver 3.9 of this firmware documentation says (according to Garmins website) that it corrects incompatibilites with Kingston CF cards. It does not, in my case, cos i have tried it :-( -

But anyway, not too bothered about that, it's the BMW Nav II i want to upgrade...

Have tried formatting the kingston 1GB card to FAT (opposed to FAT 32) and then copying the info from my original card (the 512) onto the 1GB card, to try a spoof it. However, the problem as deeper than this, as the devices says "MAP STORAGE ERROR"

rgds,

Ian

I have a Garmin 2610. I bought a Scandisk X66 2GB CF card. This works well and I can get the whole of Mapsource City Navigator European Edition V6 (waiting of V7) on the card. This takes up approximately 1.3GB of space leaving expansion possibilities for future Mapsource releases.

Are you going to sell the 2610 - if yes, how much are you looking for

Kingston CF

I have the same problem with a Kingston 1GB CF card dose not work in Nav2 but dose in Garmin 2610. A mate has a 1GB card in his 2610 that works in mine so we will swop cards don't know the make. It only seems to be Kingston cards that are a problem unless someone knows of others.

Guys, thanks for the response.

Am am not selling my 2610, as it seems to have become a bit of a family asset, and i dont want the hassle taking my BMW one on and off the bike. it will always be in the wrong place when i need it !

I will order the 2Gb card today and take the risk.

Are there firmware updates for the BMW Nav II yet ? Has anyone received any notifications ?

I have not registered mine yet, in order for me to be illegible for the v7 mapsource updates for free, so i dont know...

Thanks again.

Ian,
I recently bought a 1 gig Kingston Flash card for my Garmin 2610. After reading your post, I decided to upload some maps to it to see if I will have the same problem. It worked very well, without any problems. I had downloaded the latest USB driver for Windows XP. Maybe you need the latest version of the USB driver? I hope you get that annoying problem resolved. I only bought the Kingston 1 gig card on price.. it was the cheapest, at about USD$45.

I think you could be right Iain,

I've not had a problem with my 2610 and a 1GB card, but my ique didnt want to know until I did a software upgrade form the Garmin site.

Guys, appreciate the advice.

I have now got the 1GB Kingston CF card working, however i still get an intermittent error on boot up sometimes. I have updated to the BMW Nav II 4.3 s/w.

My conclusion is that the Kingston memory card takes a while to be read for the first time, after it has been off for a minute or so, and the Garmin times out too quickly, (i.e. before the Kingston card has responded.)

If i turn the power on after a long gap, the kingston card is rejected by both navigator II and 2610 (yes i sadly have 2), however, if i flick the power on and off quickly, and then turn it on, it does not error. Strange quirk, but manageable.

Thanks for all your ongoing help. It was the final push i needed to become a sponsor. :beerjug:
