Hi all, I'm in France and have had a really bad time with the local dealer.
My 1 year old 1200GS makes a hell of a racket from the right hand side throttle butterfly.
It's not ticking or shaft wear, it's clacking really loudly.
Bike has been at local dealer for 3 weeks, who at first said it was valve noise, but finally admitted that it was the butterfly.

They replaced the BMS-K unit, saying that was the cause, picked it up tonight and no change at all!

I'm heading to the UK at the weekend and would love to find a guru who could have a listen, any recommendations between Dover and Poole and as north as the M4?????

Cheers.

have a look at the cable adjuster and make sure it is not to tight try slacking it off a bit and see if it makes any difference.
GCS at Three legged cross near ringwood are very good ask for Jed.

My experience was second to none too :blast

That's why I go elsewhere:augie

Did they check the rocker endfloat when they did the valves ??

Did they remove the air inlet trunking and visually inspect the throttle butterfly ??

BMS K has nothing to do with the throttle body, your right hand controls that. They are talking crap.

Are you sure it isn't more serious eg piston or camshaft related. There have been a few reports of broken RH pistons on 1200's in the past, could be a broken piston ring or worse.

dont go anywhere near SLM in caterham! bad service galore, just do a search on this forum. 90% of people slate the company. look for brian giles in a search he is the man and almost half the price on most things. a real genuine expert.

Hi all, an update on my diesel 1200.
went to Brian giles, who had a good look and gave lots of advice, but can't touch it, due to warranty.
Top bloke, an oracle on 2 legs!

Took it to Bahnstormers who, at very short notice, popped the valve cover off for a look and found 1mm of end float, just been done in France, remember, and fitted new panniers for me. They changed the oil to 20-50 at my request and this calmed things a little, but still have the "clacking"
Great customer service from the guys in Alton, but I still wasn't happy about the racket my bikes makes.

Finally went to see wally at CW, what a great bloke, knows these bikes inside out and just looked at mine ticking over and said it needed sorting.
With no appointment, he wheeled it into the workshop and one of the guys set about it.
He found loose throttle cable lock nuts, sync and stepper motors way out and bosch plugs, which he swapped for NGK.
Well, it's still a bit noisy, but is a new bike to ride, throttle response and power much better, didn't catch the mechanics name, but thanks!

Wally finally convinced me that i just have a "noisy" one and he has put right all the little niggles.
What a great shop and a great bunch of people, I wish they would set up in France!
Shame I have to ride 2000 miles round trip to get the service i thought was normal from BMW!!

Wally and co, many thanks.

Glad to hear you are finally satisfied, however........

Why not write to BMW and inform them of your dissatisfaction? I certainly would:

If nobody ever complains, your 'local' agent in France (who clearly can't even set up your rocker arms properly but can charge BMW for unnecessary labour on a BMS-K unit replacement) will keep on getting away with providing sub-standard service. Not good enough is it ??
